Wolves jump to third in conference with 3-1 win over 'Jackets

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon soccer team continued their rise up the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with a 3-1 win over the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets on Thursday at WOU Soccer Field.

Western Oregon (6-4-2, 3-2-1 GNAC) entered Thursday trailing Montana State Billings (4-5-2, 3-3-0 GNAC) in conference points, 9-7, with the opportunity to overtake them for third place with a win.

"Losing our first home game last weekend was tough," said junior defender Nikki Hoey "It was important for us to bounce back this week and defend our home field."

A free kick turned into the first goal of the afternoon 20 minutes in, giving the Wolves an early 1-0 advantage. Selene Konyn had the opportunity from 30 yards out and snuck her shot in the far corner.

"It was windy and people on the wall up front were pretty short so I went for it," said Konyn of her fourth goal of the season.

The 'Jackets were able to even things up with their only score of the match seven minutes later. Kiley Sandow, after checking into the game moments before, had a deflection fall in front of her and weaved a low shot through a crowded box.

The score would go tied at 1-1 into the half, but the pace of play already seemed controlled by the Wolves. WOU out-shot MSUB 8-5 in the first half, picking up a pair of corner kicks along the way.

Despite just four shots in the second half, Western Oregon would be remarkably efficient with those tries, netting two more goals after the break. Hoey scored her first collegiate goal off a free kick from Alyssa Tomasini. The goal brings Hoey to four points on the season while Tomasini recorded two assists in the game.

Kaili Brundage cemented the win in the 74th minute on the through pass from Tomasini for an open look. Brundage, with just the keeper to beat, went right to find side netting and make it a 3-1 Wolves advantage.

The win is the third in their last four matches for Western, getting them to 10 points in the conference standings and putting them into third place.

"This was a huge win," said Brundage of the bounce back victory. "We lost to them at their place in our first conference game so it was good to get back at them."

The sixth win of the season is the most for a WOU team since 2015. Six regular season games remain to improve on that mark.

"It was great to get win number six," said Western Oregon head coach Kacey Bingham. "I know the team only won five games last year so it was an important win. The group did a great job playing as a team, but also taking care of their individual responsibilities. Some new players had to step into bigger roles and did a great job stepping up."

Western Oregon next hosts Northwest Nazarene on Saturday in another matchup with postseason implications on the line. Kickoff against the Nighthawks is set for 11 a.m. PDT at WOU Soccer Field.
