WOU soccer to be tested on road for first time in a month

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon soccer team begins a run of four straight road games this week, beginning with a meeting with in-state rival Concordia on Thursday, Oct. 24, before taking on Saint Martin's Saturday, Oct. 26.

Western Oregon (6-4-3, 3-2-2 GNAC) finished a five-game home stand last week with a 3-1 win over Montana State Billings and a 0-0 draw with Northwest Nazarene. The Wolves went 3-1-1 during that run at home, climbing to third in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with 11 points.

WOU has struggled on the road this season, going just 1-3-2 away from Monmouth, but have not seen a contest away from WOU Soccer Field since Sept. 28 when they drew 1-1 in Nampa against NNU. Their next three road games come against the bottom three teams in the current GNAC standings who have accumulated a combined 3-15-1 conference record.

The Wolves have garnered points in five of their last six matches running back to Oct. 17 and have points in eight of their last 10 dating back to Sept. 28. Offensively, they are lead by the 1.23 points per game of Alyssa Tomasini, 0.85 of Selene Konyn and 0.75 of Isabelle Creighton. Tomasini is currently second in the GNAC in total points, collecting 16 on the power of five goals and six assists.

Keeper Alex Qualls now leads the conference with four shutouts of the 13 matches she has been in net. She has a season save percentage of .696 on 32 saves.

With their next GNAC win, Western Oregon will have secured their highest conference win total since 2013 when they went 7-3-4 with a 9-4-6 overall mark.

Concordia (4-7-1, 2-3-1 GNAC) has suffered a large step back in 2019, already more than tripling their loss total from a year ago. After losing four of five matches between Sept. 14 and Oct. 10, the Cavaliers have found some traction recently, going 2-0-1 over their last three including important wins over Northwest Nazarene and MSUB.

WOU is 2-6-2 against Concordia all-time. The Wolves' 2-0 win over CU earlier this season represented their first win against the Cavs since Sept. 20, 2000. Western Oregon has never won in Portland and are 0-3-1 at Tuominen Yard. Their lone tie came Oct. 18, 2016, 1-1. Three of the 10 meetings between the teams have gone to overtime.

Saint Martin's (2-9-2, 0-6-0 GNAC) has been in free fall since entering conference play, now losers of seven straight matches. The Saints' last win came Sept. 19, 3-1, over Warner Pacific at home. Since then, they have been out-scored by opponents 26-1 during their seven-game slide. Their only goal came last week in a 3-1 loss to Seattle Pacific.

WOU is 9-9-4 all-time against SMU. The Wolves went 1-0-1 against the Saints last season and haven't lost in the series since Oct. 21, 2017. Their last win in Lacey was Oct. 15, 2015, 2-0. Saturday will be the only meeting of the regular season between the Wolves and Saints.

Thursdays matchup with Concordia is slated to kick off at 4 p.m. PDT while Saturday's game will commence at 1 p.m. Both games will have live stats and video available here.
