Soccer wins again, topping Saints to run unbeaten streak to four games

LACEY, Wash. – The Western Oregon soccer team ran their unbeaten streak to four games on Saturday with a 1-0 win over the Saint Martin's Saints in their lone meeting of the year at Saints Field.

"It feels great to get two wins on the road. That was a great accomplishment for our team. It was also great to get two shutouts," head coach Kacey Bingham said. "Defensively we have been really sharp. That will be an important part of our game for these next three games."

Western Oregon (8-4-3, 5-2-2 GNAC) matched their highest win total since 2013 with their eighth win of the season, four of which have come in their last six matches during a 4-1-1 run.

"Today's game may not have been the prettiest game we've had, but we stepped on the field and got the result we wanted and needed to strengthen our chances of claiming a spot in the playoffs," junior Nikki Hoey said.

"Coming off a Concordia win was a big confidence booster for us. We knew we had to finish the weekend with a win to put ourselves in a great position in terms of rankings (in the conference). We've been performing well on the road and we hope to continue that into next week's games," senior Kaili Brundage said.

Saturday's lone goal came 23 minutes in when Brundage delivered from the box on a deflection to the right post. Brundage has now recorded points in three of her last four appearances, including two goals over the last nine days, to jump into a tie for second on the team in goals scored. Isabelle Creighton picked up the assist, her fourth of the year, on the tip in the box.

"We've been practicing finishing on crosses for awhile so when I got the cross from Isabelle (Creighton) I knew if I just got a foot on the ball something good was going to happen," Brundage added.

Senior Alex Qualls posted her third straight shutout, running her conference lead to six total shutouts. Qualls recorded two saves while Saint Martin's (3-10-2, 1-7-0 GNAC) was held to just six total shots in the game. She has not allowed a goal since Oct. 17 in a 3-1 win over Montana State Billings, making nine saves over her last three starts.

"I'm proud of our team for going on the road and picking up two wins. That is never easy to do and I think we are looking forward to what else we can accomplish as the season come to an end and we make our playoff push," senior Kaitlin Poe said.

The Wolves continued to dominate opponents in corner kicks, picking up 10 opportunities from the corner while allowing just one to the Saints. WOU now has a 107-51 advantage in corners over their opponents this year.

"Me and my team were lucky enough to come out with a win today, I think we just need to focus on the little things and better things will happen," junior Malia Napoleon said.

Brundage and Alyssa Tomasini tied for a team-high with four shots on the day, while the Wolves as a team had 15 shots in total. Danielle VanOrd had two of her attempts come on goal.

Western Oregon now has an opportunity, with a ninth win on the year, to match their highest win total since 2002 when the Wolves went 11-6-1 overall and 8-3-1 in conference play.

"I think today wasn't our prettiest game, but good teams always find a way to win. I'm just proud of my team because this was a big week for us and it was important for us to win both games considering they were both on the road. We have both games next week on the road, so it's good to have momentum to go on," seniorJacky Beristain said.

Next up, the Wolves have their final week of road games, visiting Simon Fraser for a Halloween matchup at 6 p.m. and finishing off the week Saturday, Nov. 2 at Seattle Pacific at 1 p.m. PDT.
