No. 6 Western Washington powers past volleyball

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Oregon volleyball team gave a push in the first set to worry No. 6 Western Washington before the Vikings settled in for a 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-16) win on Saturday night at Carver Gym.

Western Oregon (3-16, 1-11 GNAC) posted a .128 hitting percentage in the opening set, riding multiple runs to a competitive opening game. After trailing by seven at 20-13, their largest deficit of the first set, the Wolves made a late run, posting a four-point rally to pull within three at 23-20. Sophomore Aubrey Stanton had three consecutive services aces over the push, recording a match-high in that category.

Western Washington (19-1, 11-1 GNAC) opened strong with 15 kills in set one on a .289 hit percentage before the Wolves found a way to slow them down over the next two sets. The Western Oregon defense progressed throughout the match, forcing more errors progressively in each game while limiting the Vikings' attack more effectively each time out.

Sianna DeCarli had a team-high seven kills on her 26 attacks. She added on two digs, a block and an assist to total 7.5 points Saturday.

Western Washington's Gabby Gunterman totaled a match-high nine kills for a .292 hitting percentage and 10.0 points for the Vikings. Teammate Malia Aleaga had 26 assists along with two block assists and one service ace to help the WWU attack.

Allie Spear had 20 digs in the match, totaling at least 20 for the third time in her last six appearances. This comes after a high of 19 digs through her 13 matches.

Next up, the Wolves return home for consecutive games at NPE Gym. They host Seattle Pacific Thursday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m. before a meeting with Saint Martin's Saturday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m. PDT.
