Soccer closes road schedule with chance to climb

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon soccer team will play their final two road games of the 2019 regular season this week, visiting Simon Fraser Thursday, Oct. 31, and Seattle Pacific Saturday, Nov. 2.

Western Oregon (8-4-3, 5-2-2 GNAC) is riding a four-game unbeaten streak dating back to Oct. 17 and has tallied points in seven of their last eight matches. Last week, the Wolves picked up 1-0 wins over both Northwest Nazarene and Concordia to move to 17 points in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings, just four points out of second with three matches left to play in the regular season.

Goalkeeper Alex Qualls has now held opponents scoreless in three straight games, not giving up a goal since Oct. 17 and not giving up multiple goals since Oct. 12. She leads the GNAC with six shutouts this season on a .741 save percentage. She has allowed just 0.93 goals per game in 15 appearances.

As a team, the Wolves are averaging 1.47 goals per game, scoring 22 this season. Those 22 goals represent the most for a WOU team since 2015. With just three more goals this year they will tie for the fourth-most during a single season during the program's NCAA era.

The win total for the Wolves is also hitting marks not seen recently in Monmouth. Western's eight wins is their most since 2015. Should they win just one more game they will hit their highest regular season win total since 2002.

Simon Fraser (1-10-1, 1-7-0 GNAC) is currently on the longest losing streak in the GNAC at five games, having not won since Oct. 3 against Saint Martin's. The Clan have scored just six goals this season in 12 games while allowing 23.

WOU is 7-10-2 against Simon Fraser all-time, going 2-4-2 in Burnaby. The Clan have won two straight in the series and four of the last five. Western's last win against SFU came on Oct. 28, 2017, in Monmouth. The Wolves' last win on the road in the series was Oct. 31, 2015.

Seattle Pacific (9-6-0, 7-2-0 GNAC) holds a four-point lead over Western Oregon for second place in the current GNAC standings. With a win, the Wolves could move within a point for second with one week of play left during the regular season. WOU could end up being just one-point back of the Falcons entering Saturday's match if the Wolves defeat Simon Fraser as Seattle Pacific only plays the game against WOU this week.

Western Oregon has already pulled out a win, 2-0, over the Falcons this season, Oct. 5 in Monmouth. Isabelle Creighton had a goal and assist in the win while Alyssa Tomasini delivered the second goal of the win. It was the first time since 2002 the Wolves have topped SPU.

WOU is 3-31-1 against Seattle Pacific all-time and 0-17 on the road in the series as they search for their first-ever win at Interbay Stadium. They have won consecutive games against SPU just one time during their series.

The Wolves will face the clan at 6 p.m. on Thursday in Burnaby. Saturday's matchup with the Falcons is set for a 1 p.m. PDT kickoff. Both games will have live stats and video available here.
