MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon soccer team carries the momentum of a 2-0 upset over Seattle Pacific into two matches at WOU Soccer Field this weekend. The Wolves host in-state rival Concordia on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 3 p.m. before a 1 p.m. meeting with Western Washington on Saturday, Oct. 12.
Last week Western Oregon (4-3-2, 1-1-1 GNAC) uprooted Seattle Pacific, 2-0, in Monmouth to deal the Falcons their first conference loss. SPU entered last week ranked 9
th in the region before the loss. For the Wolves, it was their first win over Seattle Pacific since 2002 and matched their largest-ever victory against them.
Alyssa Tomasini and
Isabelle Creighton delivered the two WOU goals, finding the back of the net within three minutes of each other early in the second half. Creighton finished with a goal and assist in the match for her second three-point performance of 2019. With the victory, Western Oregon has earned a point in five of their last six matches, going 3-1-2 since Sept. 16.
WOU carries an offense averaging 1.67 goals per game, good for third-best in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. They are 2
nd in the GNAC in assists (15), 1
st in corners (68), and 3
rd in points (45).
Individually, Western has three of the top six performers in the conference in points. Tomasini ranks 2
nd with 13 points on the year, Creighton stands at 4
th with nine and
Selene Konyn has produced eight points, good for 6
th. Tomasini's five goals this season is second only to Rikki Myers of Northwest Nazarene for the most in the GNAC.
Concordia (2-6, 0-2 GNAC) enters the week on a three-game losing streak, coming off a 3-0 loss to Seattle Pacific Oct. 3 in their last match. The Cavs' six losses already represents the most they have suffered in a single season since 1999. CU has not had a losing season since 1996. They are currently 0-3 in road games, being out-scored by opponents 7-1 away from Tuominen Yard.
The Wolves are 1-6-2 all-time against the Cavs and are currently on a three-game losing streak. WOU's last win over Concordia came on Sept. 20, 2000, by a 4-1 margin in Monmouth. Concordia has won 3-0 in each of their last three meetings.
Western Washington (7-2, 3-0 GNAC) holds the No. 3 spot in this week's West Region rankings, falling behind only Cal State L.A. and UC San Diego in the most recent poll, and are currently ranked 15
th nationally. Their only two losses this season have come to No. 10 Cal State L.A. and No. 16 Colorado School of Mines.
The Vikings are currently 1
st in the GNAC in shots (195), points (57), goals (19), assists (19) and shutouts (7). Karli White is their top shot taker, putting 30 attempts out in eight appearances. Liv Larson leads WWU with 12 points on four goals and four assists.
WOU is 5-32-1 against WWU all-time and have lost six straight in the series. The Wolves last garnered points in a match against the Vikings Oct. 9, 2014, in a tie and last won Oct. 19, 2013, in a 1-0 victory in Monmouth.
