Concordia defense overpowers Wolves volleyball at home

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon volleyball team was unable to open their final week of the 2019 season with a win, falling 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-18) to the Concordia Cavaliers on Tuesday at NPE Gym.

Western Oregon (4-22, 2-17 GNAC) opened with their best hitting percentage of the night, posting a .172 mark with 12 kills on 29 total attacks in the first set. The Wolves led at 4-3, but Concordia (10-16, 8-11 GNAC) went on a 7-2 run to follow and pulled into a lead they held the rest of the set.

Sianna DeCarli had a match-high 11 kills for Western, tacking on two aces and three digs to her night. She was the only Wolf to finish with more than four kills in the match.

The second set saw Western hold the Cavs even through the first 20 points of the game, playing to an even 10-10. Concordia then posted another big run to pull away, this rally seeing the Cavs score eight of the next 10 points.

The Cavaliers got 10 kills out of senior Jessica Wheeler Tuesday night, who finished shy of a double-double with seven digs and three blocks.

Concordia held a big advantage defensively up front, putting down eight blocks to the two of WOU. Service errors were also an issue for the Wolves, committing eight while CU had four.

Aubrey Stanton had 15 assists, a block and a dig off the bench, playing in two sets in the loss.

Allyson Crisp was in on both of Western's blocks, also picking up two digs and three kills for a .154 hitting percentage. Crisp will play her final collegiate volleyball game on Thursday at home.

The Western Oregon hitting percentage faded throughout the match, being held below .100 in the second and third sets and finishing with a .104 percentage overall. CU hit .300 or better twice on the night, posting a .303 overall percentage.

Next up, the Wolves host the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets on Thursday, Nov. 21., for Senior Night. First serve is set for 7 p.m. PST at NPE Gym.
