Wolves come back from 19 down to upend Warriors

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team overcame a 19-point deficit on Monday afternoon to earn a 59-56 win over the Corban Warriors at NPE Gym.

Western Oregon (3-6, 0-2 GNAC) would be out-scored in just one quarter of the game, but sank themselves into a big hole early with only 4 points in the opening period. Corban (6-4, 2-1 CCC) managed to score the first eight points of the game on their way to an 18-4 advantage through the first 10 minutes of play.

That lead expanded to 19 in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Kendra Murphy drove to the right side for a layup to put the Warriors up 27-8 with 7:04 remaining in the first half to push their lead to the largest it would be Monday. The Wolves were able to chip away at that lead through the rest of the quarter, eventually coming out of the second even in scoring for the period to keep the deficit at 14 going into the break.

After shooting just 26 percent from the field in the first half, Western Oregon clicked into gear offensively in the second half, hitting 48 percent of their shots on 14-for-29 shooting.

"That was a huge win for us," said junior guard Keyonna Jones. "It showed that nothing can bring us down when we come together and fight as a team. Even with being down like that at half and still having the hunger to come back and fight says a lot about us."

The third quarter proved a crucial piece of the comeback effort for WOU, out-scoring the Warriors 26-13 in the period to come within one going to the fourth, a quarter that has given the Wolves trouble throughout the season.

"Our starts have been pretty solid and it's the fourth quarter we've been struggling with, but tonight we were completely opposite," said Western Oregon head coach Holli Howard-Carpenter.  "We could not get anything to fall early and our zone was not getting it done on the defensive side.  We finally found a rhythm in the second half and were able to put together a few runs to chip away. I'm really proud of our fight and the contributions tonight from the starters and the bench."

After trailing for the first 32 minutes of the game, Western took their first lead on a baseline jumper from Meadow Aragon early on in the fourth, going up 48-47. WOU did not trail again in the game after pulling ahead for the first time.

With 30 seconds left to play, the game sat tied at 56-56. The Wolves held possession with less than a second difference between the shot clock and game clock. Jones dumped a pass into the block for Shariah Green who was able to lay it in and draw a foul with less than four seconds to play, a shot that proved to be the game-winner.

"I like playing with Shay, I feel as if we read off of each other very nicely," added Jones after feeding Green the game-winning shot. "All we had to do was make eye contact and the rest worked itself out."

Green hit the free throw to follow, setting up one last try for Corban to force overtime. Jordan Woodvine's last-second three fell short, giving the Wolves the memorable victory.

"I think we play off of each other well in terms of knowing who's doing what and where to go," said Shariah Green. "Keyonna really saw the floor well and was able to get the ball right to me. She read the play really well and honestly I think she knew what I needed to do before I did."

Jones scored a team-high 16 points with four assists and three rebounds in 35 minutes of play. Green added on 14 points with five rebounds in 26 minutes in the start.

Turnovers played a key factor in the win as Corban committed 20 turnovers to the 11 of Western. The Wolves capitalized for 21 points off turnovers compared with the five of the Warriors.

Next up, Western Oregon heads to Boise on Wednesday for their final exhibition game of the season. They will take on the Division I Boise State Broncos at 11 a.m. PST on Dec. 18 at Extramile Arena.
