Wolves battle Division I Boise State in Wednesday Exhibition Contest

BOISE, Idaho – The Western Oregon University women's basketball team concluded their portion of the 2019 schedule on Wednesday when they faced Division I Boise State. The Broncos used a pair of big runs in the second and third quarters on their way to taking the 75-32 exhibition win at ExtraMile Arena.

It was a close first quarter as Western Oregon tallied 11 points and after holding an early lead, pulled back to within two late in the frame. Keyonna Jones led the way with 12 points, along with three rebounds, two steals and an assist. Tresai McCarver added six points and seven rebounds, while Shariah Green had five points and two blocks.

Jones gave WOU the early lead hitting a free throw nearly two minutes in. Following a 5-0 run by Boise State, McCarver ended the spurt when she dialed long distance at the 6:01 mark to trim the deficit back to one. After a jumper by Jones, another long ball by McCarver had the Wolves back to within two at 11-9. An Alexis Wright jumper in the paint a few minutes later kept the lead at two for the Broncos when they closed the quarter with a three-pointer to take a 16-11 lead.

WOU came out strong early in the second quarter with Jones hitting a jumper eight seconds in and then a jumper by Sydnee Reeser kept the Wolves within a point at 16-15. Following a three-pointer by Green at the 8:11 mark pulled WOU back to within three, Boise State closed the half on a 17-0 run to take a 38-18 lead into the break.

Jones did her best to keep WOU in it to start the second half accounting for the first seven points before Meadow Aragon added a basket later in the quarter. Despite the strong play from Jones, the Broncos outscored WOU 22-9 in the third to hold a 60-27 lead entering the final frame.

The run continued to start the fourth with Boise State scoring the first six points before Green snapped the run with a layup two minutes in. Amber Winkler and Olivia Denton added points the rest of the way before Boise State claimed the 75-32 victory.

WOU was held to a 22 percent (13-58) shooting clip from the field, going 3-16 (19) from three and 3-6 (50) at the foul line. Boise State connected on 46 percent (30-65), 32 percent (7-22) from three and 67 percent (8-12) at the foul line.

Mallory McGwire led the Broncos with 19 points and added six rebounds. Jade Loville added 10 points. Boise State used a strong advantage in terms of bench points (32-7) and points in the paint (40-8) to take the win.

WOU will now be off for the holidays before returning to action when they host Western Washington on Thursday, January 2 in GNAC play with tipoff set for 5:15 p.m. inside NPE Building Gym.
