SEATTLE, Wash.—Avenging a two-point loss while playing on the road in January, Seattle Pacific University defeated Western Oregon University, 66-57, in GNAC men's basketball action on Thursday night.
Seattle Pacific (14-6, 11-4 GNAC) not only snapped a 10-game losing streak to Western Oregon (17-7, 10-5 GNAC) that stretched back to the 2014-15 season, but also snared sole possession of third place in the GNAC standings with the win.
Both teams have five games remaining in the regular season and have all but clinched spots in the six-team GNAC Tournament next month.
Western Oregon will continue its road swing through Washington with a Saturday afternoon battle against No. 14-ranked Saint Martin's University. Opening tip against the Saints is set for 2 p.m. in Lacey, Washington.
Western Oregon was held to just 11 field goals in the first half of play and entered the locker room trailing 37-28. The team's 28 points were tied for their second lowest first-half output of the season.
In the second half, the Falcons extended their advantage to 14 points at the 13:02 mark thanks to a Sharif Khan 3-pointer, but the Wolves countered with eight straight points—five alone from
Darius Lubom—to inch back to within six at 50-44.
Turning back to their defense to clinch the victory, SPU held the Wolves without a point for nearly five minutes of play to generate its largest lead at 60-44 following a Harry Cavell jumper with 6:24 to play.
Dalven Brushier led the Wolves with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Lubom finished with 12 points after hitting 4-of-8 from 3-point range.
Three players reached double figures for the Falcons with Coleman Wooten leading the way with 13 points.
