Woods smashes school record in Michigan

>>> COMPLETE RESULTS

ALLENDALE, Mich.—
A day after recording a national qualifier in the 800-meter run, Western Oregon senior Olivia Woods shattered her own school record in the 400 while competing at the Grand Valley State Big Meet on Saturday.

Running her first open 400 of the season, Woods popped a 56.71 to place second overall in the event and slashed almost a full second off her previous indoor lifetime best of 57.54. The time fell .06 shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 56.65.

Also in the 400, Grayson Burke neared a career indoor best by clocking a season-best 58.84 to place 13th overall. A third member of the WOU sprinting corps, Bethanie Altamirano, dipped below the 60-second barrier for the first time as a collegiate athlete with a 59.92.

On the men's side, the quartet of Justin Crosswhite, Gabe Arce-Torres, Curt Knott and Hunter Hutton improved upon the team's national qualifying mark in the distance medley relay with a time of 9:54.85.

The mark was good for almost a 7-second improvement as the WOU men previously registered a 10:01.78 this season. The performance also boosts the crew's national ranking to a top-10 spot on the DII performance list and No. 6 on WOU's all-time indoor list.

Later in the day, Arce-Torres clocked a 50.07 in the 400 for sixth place overall while Tyler Jones hit a 1:56.68 in the 800 a day after competing in the 3,000.

The Wolves will travel to the GNAC Indoor Track & Field Championships next with the two-day competition taking place Feb. 15-16 in Nampa, Idaho.
