WOU offense explodes in game two for series split

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon and Saint Martin's baseball teams split a pair of games Sunday afternoon at WOU Baseball Field to give the Wolves a 2-2 record over the four-game weekend series. Saint Martin's took game one 10-0 before the Wolves cranked out the offense for an 11-5 win in game two.

The shutout loss was the first scoreless game for Western Oregon (15-8, 12-8 GNAC) since they were shut out by MSUB 3-0 March 9, 2018.

Saint Martin's (11-18, 7-13 GNAC) was held scoreless into the third when they began a run of three consecutive innings of scoring. The Saints were aided by five defensive mistakes from WOU as SMU plated four unearned runs in the game. It was the second game of at least five defensive errors by WOU this season.

SMU put together three separate three-run innings, buoyed by the two-run home run of Austin Feist in the fourth on his way to a three-hit game. He finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI to go along with his homer.

Of the four hits collected by Western Oregon, two belonged to JJ Sargeant who went 2-for-3 in the start.

Christian Hammerich helped lock down the defense in the closing frames, throwing two shutout innings of relief with two strikeouts.

Game two saw the Wolves' offense explode, posting the most runs by either side during a game in the series.

Western Oregon came out of the gates hot with four runs in the first and another six runs in the second to chase two Saints pitchers from the game.

Freshman Jacob Maiben had his first collegiate three-hit game in the nightcap, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI to raise his batting average to .390 on the season. He was one of six players to register multiple hits in the game as WOU totaled 15 hits in the win.

Koty Fallon and Cam Walker each provided an inning of shutout relief to hold SMU at bay.

Next up for Western Oregon is a four-game series at home against Northwest Nazarene. The series will begin with a doubleheader April 5 at WOU Baseball Field. First pitch in game one is set for 1 p.m. PDT.
