MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon baseball team rolled to a 13-1 win over Northwest Nazarene in game one of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon before game two would be suspended in the bottom of the fourth due to inclement weather at WOU Baseball Field.
Western Oregon (16-8, 11-3 GNAC) managed to score in seven of their eight innings at the plate in the 12-run win, putting multiple runs on the board in four separate frames.
Patrick Chung doubled to left in the first to score
Collin Runge and open up the scoring. It was the first of three hits in the game for Chung, who finished 3-for-5 with a run scored, three RBI and a walk.
The 18 hits totaled by the Wolves was their second-highest single-game total of the year. Six players finished with multi-hit games, four of which had three hits.
Freshman
Jacob Maiben put together his second straight three-hit performance, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI, raising his batting average to a season-high .422 in 20 appearances.
Bailey Daugio (0-1) was chased from the game in the second after another three runs crossed the plate for WOU. Chung hit in another two runs when he singled through the right side.
Alex Roth picked up the win in his fifth straight start, tossing six innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out four. Roth (6-0) has earned a win in six of his seven appearances this season.
Kolbe Bales and
Koty Fallon combined for three shutout innings of relief to back Roth up, giving up one hit over the final three innings.
Game two saw rain play a factor for all four innings before play was halted. With Northwest Nazarene (15-14, 11-10 GNAC) leading 1-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth, the game was suspended due to inclement weather.
Play will be resumed in game two at a later date and time yet to be determined.
Currently, the Wolves and Nighthawks are scheduled to play another doubleheader April 8 at WOU Baseball Field. First pitch Monday is currently set for 12 p.m. in game one.
