MONMOUTH, Ore.—Taking silver in the javelin for her second All-GNAC honor in as many years,
Darian Wilson highlighted the second and final day of action for the Western Oregon track & field teams at the GNAC Championships on Saturday.
A year after taking bronze as a freshman, Wilson uncorked a season-best distance of 151-4 (46.13m) to earn runner-up honors. Wilson's distance was nearly a foot improvement over her precious best this season and should place the sophomore inside the top 15 on the NCAA DII performance list. Ranked No. 3 in NCAA DII entering the day, Northwest Nazarene's Ellie Logan repeated her title in the javelin with a throw of 157-4 (46.13m).
The WOU men and women each finished with 41-point tallies for 7th-place finishes in the team chase. Seattle Pacific edged Central Washington, 154 to 150, for the women's title while Western Washington notched 138 1/2 points to fend off Alaska Anchorage (114 1/2) for the men's crown.
The WOU women's team scored points in both relays. In the first event on the track on Saturday, the 400-meter relay tacked on three points with a season-best 49.07, while the 1,600-meter version secured six points and All-GNAC honors with a 3rd-place finish in the final event of the day.
The WOU quartet smashed their season best in the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:50.93 and nearly hit the NCAA DII provisional qualifier (3:48.20) in the process.
The men's relay equaled the women's effort with a 3rd-place finish to secure an additional podium placement. The foursome crossed in 3:17.87 for a time just over a second shy of breaking into the school's all-time top 10 performance list. The relay finish and its six alootet points allowed the men's team to jump two places in the team standings by leaping ahead of MSU Billings and Saint Martin's.
A day after scoring a combined 11 points in the shot and the discus,
Moana Gianotti added three more to her haul with a 6th-place result in the women's hammer after launching a 138-9 (42.30m).
The men's hammers throwers recorded a pair of point-scoring efforts from
Mont Child and
Sam Cole as the duo went 7-8 in the results for three points. Child hit a career best 167-11 (51.19m) for 7th and Cole 8th with a 165-1(50.56m) to nearly top his PR.
A day after setting a career best in the open 400 with a 48.93 to advance from prelims,
Gabe Arce-Torres almost repllicated the effort with a 48.97 in the finals. Arce-Torres placed 5th overall to secure four team points
The Wolves scored 19 of its 41 total points on the men's side in the 800 and the 1,500.
Justin Crosswhite and
Parker Marson led the field in the 1,500 for the majority of the race before crossing in 4th and 7th for seven team points,
Curt Knott,
Adam Alnazer and
Max Carmona finished 4-5-6 in the two-lapper for 12 points. Knott led the group in 4th place with a 1:55.35.
Four additional Wolves placed 5th overall in their respective individual events. For the women,
Olivia Woods scored in the 800 for the third straight season with a 2:12.62 while freshman
Ana Popchock recorded a career best in the 400 hurdles with a 1:03.69.
On the men's side,
Codi Blodgett took 5th in the 100 and missed out on All-GNAC honors by .02 of a second with a time of 11.24. Blodgett finished in a virtual tie with Alaska Anchorage's Enrique Campbell only for the video review separated the two sprinters, 11.237 to 11.239. Central Washington's Bobby Widmar snared the final All-GNAC slot with a 11.22.
Almost matching his career fastest time that was set during Friday's prelims, freshman
Gabe Arce-Torres cruised to a 48.97 in the open 400 for the team's final 5th-place performance.
Competing in the longest event of the day,
Grace Knapp established a new career best with a 17:29.49 in the 5,000. Knapp's time was a four-second improvement over her previous fastest and good for 7th place.
Tyler Jones followed with a 6th-place run in the men's 5,000 after touring the track with a 15:07.35.
