Soccer Goes to Overtime Against Otters

SEASIDE, Calif. – Neither team was able to score a goal during regulation, as both goalies were able to turn away a couple of good chances to keep the game scoreless. In overtime, Cal State Monterey Bay was able to net the game-winning goal nearly two minutes in to take the 1-0 victory over the Western Oregon University soccer team Saturday night.

"We did some things well in the first half, but were never really an attacking threat," Head Coach Kacey Bingham said. "We started to pick it up in the second half and create better chances, but couldn't find the back of the net. I thought our defense did a really good job limiting the opportunities for the other team. I was proud of the team for playing with so much grit tonight."

Western Oregon (1-2) controlled play throughout regulation and especially in the second half as they out shot the Otters (4-0) 7-2. Overall for the game the Wolves tallied nine shots to six for Cal State Monterey Bay with both teams landing five shots on goal. The Otters held a slight 4-3 edge on corner kicks and there were 25 total fouls called, with 16 whistled on WOU.

The Wolves generated a couple of good chances late in the first half when Isabelle Creighton fired a shot that was saved. Shortly after her first attempt, Creighton tried another shot that just went wide.

The second half went for nearly 10 minutes before the first shot was attempted by Kaitlin Poe that went wide. After Danielle VanOrd's shot also just sailed wide and the Otters missed on a chance, Creighton got another look and her shot was saved again at the 71:48 mark to keep the game scoreless.

Erika Moreno added a shot just a few minutes later that was also saved as the Wolves really started to ramp up the pressure. Selene Konyn's shot just missed, Alyssa Tomasini's shot was saved, as well as Konyn's next attempt with five minutes to play.

Then in overtime, Cal State Monterey Bay generated the only chances just over a minute in when Alex Qualls saved the first shot attempted by Melissa Wilson, but just 27 seconds later Lia Kilgore scored at the 91:42 mark to give the Otters the 1-0 overtime victory.

Creighton took three shots with two landing on goal. Konyn, Tomasini and Moreno also landed shots on goal. Qualls played all 91:42 minutes in goal and made four saves.

Kilgore led the Otters with three shots, as two landed on goal including the game-winner. In goal, Alyssa Noh played the entire game and made five saves.

The Wolves will remain in California as they will travel to San Francisco to play Academy of Art on Monday starting at 11 a.m.
