Soccer to Open Home Slate This Thursday and Saturday

MONMOUTH, Ore. – After playing the first four games of the season on the road, the Western Oregon University soccer team will now play their first pair of home games starting with Hawaii Pacific on Thursday at 3 p.m. and then against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the WOU Soccer Field.

This past week, WOU (1-2-1) allowed just three goals as they fell in overtime to Cal State Monterey Bay (0-1) and then tied Academy of Art this past Monday at two-all. The Wolves have scored eight goals and allowed just four so far this season, taking 54 shots with 25 on goal, while opponents have taken 20 shots with 10 landing on goal. WOU has also dominated in corner kick opportunities with 31 to just 11 for the opposition.

Alyssa Tomasini leads the offense with seven points, recording three goals and an assist. Already four games into the season this year, Tomasini has equaled last year's point total. Kaili Brundage has two goals and four total points, putting her a point from last year's total. Isabelle Creighton and Selene Konyn have three points with both a goal and an assist. Jacky Beristain has a goal and Hannah Rispler, Danielle VanOrd and Melinda Ortega have all added an assist.

Beristain and Malia Napoleon have logged the most minutes on the team with 382. Nikki Hoey has played in 359 minutes, Knoyn is at 351 and Kaitlin Poe has logged 349. In goal, Alex Qualls has started all four games and has a 1.07 goals against average with six saves. She has logged 336 minutes. Cassidy Flammang also has played in 45 minutes in net this season.

In terms of rankings nationally and in the GNAC WOU is 58th nationally and second in the GNAC in assists per game (1.50), 66th nationally and second in the GNAC in points per game (5.50), 62nd nationally and second in the GNAC in scoring offense per game (2.0), third in the GNAC in shutout percentage (.250), 37th nationally and second in the GNAC in total assists (6), 49th nationally and second in the GNAC in total goals (8), 46th nationally and second in the GNAC in total points (22).

Individually, Tomasini is tied for 41st nationally and first in the GNAC in game-winning goals (1), 82nd nationally and second in the GNAC in goals per game (0.75), 97th nationally and second in the GNAC in points per game (1.75), fourth in the GNAC in total assists (1), 33rd nationally and second in the GNAC in total goals (3), and 40th nationally and second in the GNAC in total points (7). Creighton, Konyn, Ortega, Rispler and VanOrd are all tied with Tomasini for fourth in the GNAC in assists with one. Brundage ranks 94th nationally and fourth in the GNAC in total goals (2) and is sixth in the GNAC in total points (4).

Hawaii Pacific is 1-1 on the season falling in a close game on home on Sept. 12 to Dallas Baptist (1-2) and then they defeated Central Washington this past Monday in Ellensburg (3-2). The Sharks went 6-6-6 last year with a 4-2-3 record away from home. Hawaii Pacific is averaging 10.5 shots per game and allowing 16 per game. Ebony Madrid has three goals and an assist for seven points.

Hawaii Pacific holds a 2-1 series record with WOU as the Wolves won the first meeting back in 2000 (1-0) in Arcata, Calif. The last two meetings took place in Hawaii with the Sharks winning both meetings 3-1 back in 2014 and most recently in 2017.

Cal State Dominguez Hills is 1-1-1 on the season falling to Azusa Pacific (0-3) and after tying MSU Billings (3-3) they defeated Fresno Pacific in overtime last Friday (1-0). The Toros will play Concordia in Portland on Thursday before facing the Wolves.

Cal State Dominguez Hills went 3-10-4 last year with a 1-6-1 record away from home. The Toros are averaging 13.3 shots on goal while opponents have average 14 shots per game. They've landed 60 percent (24-40) of shots on goal, while the opposition has tallied 55 percent (23-42) on net.

Patricia Rubio-Martinez leads the way with three points tallying a goal and an assist. Sofia Litendahl, Alyssa Dunphy, Madeleine Simones and Haley McDevitt all have scored a goal. In net, Alyssa Newsom and Jessica Neighbors have each seen time with Newsom going 0-1-1 with nine saves and a 3.58 goals against average. Neighbors is 1-0-1 with a 0.00 goals against average and seven saves.

Cal State Dominguez Hills holds a 2-1 series advantage with WOU winning to most recent meeting last year claiming the 1-0 win on the road. Each meeting has taken place in California with the Toros winning the earlier meetings both by scores of 5-0 in 2001 and 2005.
