Konyn’s Golden Goal Sends Wolves to OT Win Over Toros

MONMOUTH, Ore. – In a back-and-forth game down the stretch, the Western Oregon University soccer team was able to pick up the game-winning goal just a few minutes into overtime to defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-2 Saturday in non-conference action.

"It feels so great to win an overtime game. It was a back-and-forth game today and we responded every time we needed to," Head Coach Kacey Bingham said. "This group is showing so much heart and are coming to compete every game."

WOU (3-2-1) wasted no time to start the overtime, with Isabelle Creighton getting a chance just over a minute in that went wide. Just a minute after that, Creighton helped setup the golden goal when she found Selene Konyn in front and she was able to send it past the goalie in the 93rd minute for the game-winning goal.

"Isabelle drove the ball down the line and I was just running in the middle when she sent a cross into the box," Konyn said. "The ball showed up at my feet and then I tapped it in."

The Wolves generated chances throughout the first half with Alyssa Tomasini and Danielle VanOrd firing shots on goal that were both saved. WOU tallied five shots in the first half, while Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-3-1) also recorded five shots throughout the first 45 minutes. Alex Qualls picked up a pair of saves in the first half for WOU.

An early corner kick to start the second half helped trigger the first goal of the game for the Wolves. Konyn took the corner and sent a ball out to VanOrd. VanOrd then turned and sent a pass into the box for Kaitlin Poe who knocked it in for the 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.

"My goal came off a corner kick which we've gotten a lot of so it was nice to put one away. Selene played the corner into Danielle who played a perfect ball to me and all I had to do was tap it in," Poe said.

The Toros came back as after a few shot attempts near the 70th minute, Holly Kaemerle was able to send one home from roughly 30 yards out into the lower left corner of the net to even the score at one in the 76th minute.

Cal State Dominguez Hills had little time to celebrate the tying goal as the Wolves went right back on the attack with a shot by VanOrd being blocked which later led to a corner kick. This time Tomasini took the corner and she sent a perfect shot into the top corner of the net for the goal and a 2-1 lead in the 82 minute.

"I have a tendency to hit the ball with too much power and so I was actually thinking it was going wide then I saw it in the net and I was just screaming," Tomasini said. "We all kind of stopped making sure the ball actually went in, but I was excited."

With time ticking down, the Toros came rushing back as just over a minute later Kaemerle struck again when she took a pass from Sofia Litendahl off a free kick and header it home to tie the game at two in the 83rd minute.

"I think I can talk for everyone in saying that we are pumped," Tomasini said. "Especially to have the first games at home and to come off of two wins. Now we're traveling to Montana next week hoping to grab some more wins."

WOU was able to generate a few more chances in regulation with VanOrd and Poe getting chances that just went wide to send the game into overtime.

WOU ended up outshooting Cal State Dominguez Hills, 16-13, landing eight on goal to six for the Toros. The Wolves dominated corner kicks taking seven to just one for the Toros. It was a physical game that saw four yellow cards (three on the Toros) and 29 total fouls.

Tomasini paced the Wolves with four shots, including three on goal. Creighton and VanOrd added three shots each and VanOrd had one on goal. Poe and Konyn each tallied two shots, as Poe had one on goal and Konyn with two. Hannah Rispler added a shot on goal as well. In goal, Qualls played all 92:32 and made four saves. Seven players played the entire game including Nikki Hoey, Poe, Jacky Beristain, VanOrd, Konyn, Malia Napoleon and Qualls.

Kaemerle led the Toros with six shots and four on goal. In goal, Jessica Neighbors played the whole game and saved five shots.

Riding a two-game winning streak WOU will now travel to Montana to face MSU Billings to open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play this coming Thursday starting at 1 p.m. (Pacific Time).
