Soccer Outshoots Yellowjackets, But Fall Just Short in GNAC Opener

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Western Oregon University soccer team definitely generated their fair share of chances, but a goal eluded them on the afternoon. MSU Billings was able to tally the only goal midway through the second half and it held up as the Yellowjackets took the 1-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference win Thursday afternoon.

"I was really disappointed in our effort today. This team is capable of so much more than what we did today," Head Coach Kacey Bingham said. "The true test will be how we bounce back and prepare for our game on Saturday."

WOU (3-3-1, 0-1 GNAC) fired 10 shots to just three for MSU Billings (2-2-2, 1-0 GNAC) but were unable to get any of the 10 shots on goal. Of the three that the 'Jackets took, all three landed on goal with Alex Qualls recording a pair of saves.

The Wolves had all six corner kicks and the game featured just eight combined fouls with each team committing four.

It took some time before either team was able to get a shot off when a Jacky Beristain shot in the 14th minute went high. A chance by Danielle VanOrd was blocked and WOU just missed on a few corner kick chances by Selene Konyn.

The WOU defense kept MSU Billings without a shot until the 38th minute when Julia Keller's shot was saved by Qualls. The Wolves had two more chances before halftime with a shot by Kennedy Clay and another by Sarah Foulk, but both sailed high.

Alyssa Tomasini and Konyn each had a few chances at more corner kicks, with one resulting in a shot for Hannah Rispler that went wide. Later a shot by Erika Moreno Gonzalez went wide left and a chance for Tomasini went high.

The 'Jackets again didn't have a shot for a while, but when they finally did get one off, they made it worthwhile. In the 68th minute Lexie Bloyder took a shot from 40 yards out that hit the right post and bounced in for the goal to give MSU Billings a 1-0 lead.

WOU had three more shots down the stretch with Kaili Brundage missing wide left, Beristain missing wide right and then a shot in the final minute by Isabelle Creighton that was blocked to preserve the 1-0 win for the 'Jackets.

Beristain led the way in shots with two, while eight other players had a shot for WOU. Qualls played all 90 minutes in goal.

Three different players had a shot for MSU Billings with Bloyder scoring the only goal. In net, Erinn Harder played all 90 minutes and recorded the shutout without a save.

WOU will continue the road trip Saturday when they will play at Northwest Nazarene starting at 1 p.m. (Pacific) in Nampa, Idaho.
