MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon Wolves volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-19) to the Simon Fraser Clan to finish off their first home week of play on Saturday at NPE Gym.
Simon Fraser (6-6, 2-2 GNAC) opened the match on a 12-4 run, getting a hot start from senior Betsie de Beer. The outside hitter finished with a match-high nine kills along with six digs, one assist and three service aces. The Clan would not trail in the opening set.
Western Oregon (2-9, 0-4 GNAC) took their first lead of the match early in the second set. After the Clan grabbed a 3-0 advantage to open the game, the Wolves rattled off five straight points on the serve of sophomore
Aubrey Stanton. Stanton had 13 assists along with five digs, a block and two service aces on the day.
Delaney Smith and
Lauren Smith each had five kills to lead the WOU offense. Delaney put together another impressive offensive night with a .455 hit percentage, following up her .600 mark on Thursday. She added on three blocks and a team-high 7.5 points.
Western had their largest point total of the afternoon in the final set, pushing late for 19 points to close. As a team, the Wolves had a flat .000 hit percentage with 21 kills on 93 attacks.
Lauren Smith contributed 5.5 points with her five kills, one block and dig. It was the sixth match with five or more kills for the freshman.
The Wolves head back on the road next week, visiting Saint Martin's on Thursday, Oct. 3, before an Oct. 5 meeting with Seattle Pacific.
