Soccer Travels to Colorado to Open 2019 Campaign

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The 2019 season will start a few states away for the Western Oregon University soccer team when they will travel to Colorado to face Western Colorado on Friday starting at noon and Sunday against host Adams State at 10 a.m. Both starts times are Pacific.

The Wolves have already played a few exhibition matches to start the season picking up shutout wins against both Linfield (6-0) and Clark College (2-0). Sixteen upperclassmen will enter the season on this year's roster with six seniors and 10 juniors. The roster in total will have 24 players, with four sophomores and four freshmen.

Of the total roster, 16 saw playing time last year that are back this season as Alyssa Tomasini played in all 17 games, starting 16, coming away with seven points with two goals and three assists. She tallied a game-winning goal. Kaili Brundage played in 15 games, starting 13, posting a goal and three assists for five points. She also had a game-winning goal. Isabelle Creighton played in all 17 games and had two points scoring a goal. Creighton posted a game-winning goal. Hannah Cabral will be redshirting this season, but last year she played in all 17 games and added two goals for four total points. Alexie Morris played in 16 games last year and scored three goals for her six points, she added a game-winning goal. Selene Konyn logged 1,392 minutes playing in all 17 games and starting 16. Kennedy Clay tallied both a goal and an assist in playing all 17 games. She added a game-winning goal. Kaitlin Poe played in all 17 games and started 10 logging 1,092 minutes and added an assist. Nikki Hoey played in all 17 games, starting 10 and played in 1,092 minutes and had an assist. Brynn Kubo played in four games last year. Jacky Beristain played in all 17 games and logged a team-best 1,599 minutes on defense. Pam Barrett played in one game last year. Melinda Ortega was in nine games and added an assist. Malia Napoleon played in 16 games and had 14 starts, while Jordan Confair played in 10 games. In goal, Alex Qualls started all 17 games and logged 1,598 minutes in net, along with 72 saves, 1.63 goals against average and had five wins. During the season she also had five shutouts.

New to the team this year is Danielle VanOrd who transfers from Lane CC and is originally from Anchorage, Alaska. During her two seasons at Lane, VanOrd produced 31 goals and added 16 assists, being named to the NWAC All-Star team both seasons. Jessie Scott also arrived from Lane CC and is also originally from Anchorage, Alaska. Scott started all 18 games this past season for Lane, taking home All-Region honors and her solid play on defense helped the Titans to the highest shutout total in the conference. Both were part of 14-2-2 seasons with Lane in 2018. Sarah Foulk arrived from Sierra College and is originally from Elk Grove, Calif. Foulk played in 25 games on defense last year and added a goal and two assists. She helped lead the team to 14 shutouts. Kendall Rooney arrived from Humboldt State and is originally from Happy Valley, Ore. Of the freshmen, Cassidy Flammang redshirted last season with the Wolves, Emily Wheeler stays in the state to play for WOU from Roseburg, Ore., where she was named the Goalkeeper of the Year for the Southwest Conference, along with being a two-time captain, earning All-Conference honors the past two seasons and recorded three shutouts this past year. Erika Gonzalez Moreno joins from Hillsboro, Ore., as she helped Glencoe to a 9-4-2 record last fall and lead the team into the Oregon 6A State Tournament. Hannah Rispler also remains in the state from Gresham, Ore., where she was a multi-sport athlete at Barlow High School in helping to guide the Bruins to a 14-2-1 overall record and an appearance in the Oregon 6A State Playoffs advancing to the semifinals.

This will be the first time WOU has faced both Western Colorado and Adams State, both out of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Western Colorado is based in Gunnison and will play a neutral site game against the Wolves in Alamosa, home to Adams State. In the first meeting with Western Colorado, the Mountaineers went 4-12-1 last year, including a 1-5-1 record away from home and 0-4 mark in neutral site contests. Megan Wheelock returns as the top offensive player after scoring three goals and an assist in 2018. Alex Mason added four points with a pair of goals and returns as well. Goalie Emilie Eckhart is gone after starting all 17 games last year and making 124 saves, along with a 1.58 goals against average. Junior Grace Walker and sophomore Kaeyla Noble will look to fill the role as the new goalie this season.

Adams State went 2-15 last year, including a 1-7 mark at home and ended the season on an 11-game losing streak. Top returning offensive player Diana Cerillo is back after playing in 17 games and collecting five goals and three assists. The next two top point producers in Breana Flores and Kendall Weld who each tallied 10 points aren't on the 2019 roster. On defense, Mollee Heeny is back after logging 1,535 minutes in playing all 17 games last year, Brenna Oakey and Payton Billingham each played at least 1,200 minutes last year on the back line. In goal, Corri Zaiger is back after starting all 17 games and logging 1,549 minutes and making 127 saves.
