Soccer Plays Defensive Game at Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Scoring chances were hard to come by for both teams Sunday as the Western Oregon University soccer team faced Adams State University. Just 13 total shots were attempted, with only five landing on goal. In the end, an own goal was the difference in the final minutes to give Adams State the 1-0 victory.

"Although we didn't get the result we wanted today, we were happy with the effort we put in," Head Coach Kacey Bingham said. "I thought our attack was dangerous and we created several corner kicks. At the end we started to fatigue and gave up the own goal. We need to try to put games away earlier and really capitalize on shots and set pieces."

WOU (1-1) held an 8-5 edge in shots and 3-2 on goal. The Wolves held a big 8-1 advantage on corner kicks and the match featured 20 combined fouls with each team receiving a yellow card.

WOU generated a chance just a few minutes in when Alyssa Tomasini's shot was blocked. The pressure continued and Danielle VanOrd added another chance a minute later when her shot was saved. In the fifth minute, the third straight shot for the Wolves arrived when Isabelle Creighton fired a shot that just went wide.

Following a few corner kick opportunities for the Wolves, Adams State (1-0) picked up their first shot of the game nearly 30 minutes in that went wide. Down the stretch of the opening half, WOU had three corner kicks and Adams State had one, with the Grizzlies getting a shot right before halftime that went high leaving the game scoreless at the break.

WOU nearly got on the board a few minutes into the second half when a yellow card gave the Wolves a chance just outside the box. Kaitlin Poe took the shot and it hit the crossbar keeping the game scoreless. A corner kick chance in the 63rd minute by Tomasini resulted in a chance for VanOrd and she just sent the shot high.

Both goalies then made saves with Creighton getting a chance in the 76th minute and Adams State generated a shot on Alex Qualls that was saved in the 79th minute. Following a shot by Hannah Rispler that was saved in the 83rd minute, the own goal happened just over a minute later at the 84:42 mark to give Adams State the 1-0 lead.

WOU had one more chance to try and even the score when Creighton's shot just went wide and the Grizzlies held on for the win.

Creighton led the Wolves with three shots and one on goal. VanOrd had a pair of shots with one on goal. Rispler had one shot that ended up on goal. Qualls played all 90 minutes in goal and made one save.

Diana Cerillo led Adams State with two shots and Zoe Moses had the only shot on goal (second one was the own goal). Corri Zaiger played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves for the win.

WOU will now travel to California to face Cal State Monterey Bay this coming Saturday at 7 p.m. in Seaside, Calif., and then will face Academy of Art in San Francisco on Monday, Sept. 16 starting at 11 a.m.
