MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon men's basketball team hits the road for the first time in six weeks on Saturday visiting the Western Washington Vikings and will now travel to Burnaby to face Simon Fraser after with the postponement playing the Clan on Monday, Jan. 20 as the game was originally scheduled for this Thursday.
Western Oregon (9-3, 3-3 GNAC) had a four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, going to overtime for the second time this season and losing 98-88 to the Seattle Pacific Falcons at NPE Gym. Leading for most of the game, the Wolves were unable to protect an 11-point lead as SPU stayed undefeated in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play and dealt the Wolves their first loss in Monmouth this year.
Early in the week, the Wolves stamped one in the record books with their 108-73 win over the Saint Martin's Saints. Senior
Dalven Brushier dropped 37 points, the most for a WOU player since 2006, on 13-for-19 shooting. He would hit nine 3-pointers in the game, a school NCAA-era record. The team's 18 made 3-pointers was the third-most in a single game during their NCAA era.
WOU continues to lead the GNAC in shooting, hitting 50.3 percent of field goals and 41.7 percent of 3-pointers to score a conference-best 86.6 points a game.
Brushier has also bumped up to the third-highest scoring average in the GNAC, marking 19.7 points per game in 12 appearances. He is one of four Wolves averaging more than 12 points a game along with
Darius Lubom,
Jaylyn Richardson and
Cameron Cranston.
Simon Fraser (10-5, 3-3 GNAC) currently sits in a tie with WOU for fifth in the GNAC. Hobbling to a 1-3 record through their first four games of 2020, the Clan were swept on their recent two-game trip to Alaska.
SFU averages 80.7 points per game while allowing 74.1 to opponents. They hold a conference-best rebounding margin of +6.3, relying on the 8.0 rebounds a game of sophomore Wilfried Balata, 6.9 of junior Julian Roche and 5.5 of junior Jasdeep Singh. Singh is also averaging a team-best 17.3 points per game through 15 appearances.
WOU is 17-1 against Simon Fraser all-time. The lone win in the series for the Clan was on Feb. 11, 2017, in Burnaby, 68-63. Since then, the Wolves have won four straight in the series. WOU is 8-1 in Burnaby.
Western Washington (10-4, 5-1 GNAC) was picked to win the conference in the preseason coaches' poll and has done well to live up to the hype so far. Currently riding a six-game winning streak dating back to Dec. 7, the Vikings' only conference loss came at the hands of Simon Fraser, falling by three, 77-74, on the road. They have yet to face GNAC-leader Seattle Pacific, but are slated for their first meeting with the Falcons on Jan. 23.
WWU trails only Western Oregon in offensive production in the GNAC, putting up 82.9 points per game over 14 contests. They also hold the top scoring margin at +11.2, the only margin in the conference in double figures. They have held opponents to 42.5 percent field goal shooting and will provide the stoutest defense by the numbers the Wolves have seen yet this year.
Preseason GNAC Player of the Year Trevor Jasinsky is averaging 16.2 points per game for the Vikings along with 5.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists. He is also playing a hefty 32.7 minutes per game.
WOU is 13-27 all-time against WWU. The team's each defended home court in their regular season meetings the last two seasons. WWU has won five of the last seven meetings dating back to 2017. Western Oregon's last win in Bellingham was on Jan. 26, 2016, in a 78-58 victory. WOU is 3-16 on the road in the series.
