Hopwood breaks own school record in the 60, nearly sets mark in the 200 as WOU has strong showings in Boise and Seattle

BOISE, Idaho/Seattle, Wash. – Maya Hopwood continued to add to her already impressive school record in the 60-meter Friday in Boise. Not only did she set a new school record in the event, she then qualified for the 200-meter and will compete in both finals on Saturday. Jenelle Hurley and Brennen Sorah also put together strong showings in Boise, while Grace Knapp entered into the 5k at the Husky Classic.

Hopwood continues to set her own school record in the 60-meter and then break it later in the season. Having already set the mark earlier in the year, the freshman continued to lower her time in the event when she sprinted to a time of 7.58 in the preliminaries at Boise State to not only post the top time in heat No. 7, but in all the preliminaries. The next closest time was 7.69 by Kristen LaCosse from Hawaii, who also ran in heat No. 7. Forty-five total competitors ran in the seven heats during the 60-meter preliminaries. Hopwood will now run in Saturday's final. Her time puts her in the top-20 in all of Division II.

Hopwood later qualified in the women's 200-meter dash when she led heat No. 17 with a time of 25.17. Overall, she had the third-best time in the preliminaries out of 75 total competitors. She will compete in the finals on Saturday. She is now second in the school record books in the 200, sitting just behind Madison McClung's top time of 25.16 set back in 2012.

Hurley reached a distance of 17-04.75 in the women's long jump at the Boise State Challenge to come in ninth during the third flight and overall that helped her finish ninth out of 34 competitors. In the men's long jump, Sorah made a push for a top-five finish in his flight as his mark of 19-03.50 placed him sixth in the first flight. In the overall standings, he came in 15th.

Sorah also competed in the men's 60-meter hurdles as he posted a time of 8.78 in heat No. 2 to come in second. Overall, he tied for 10th in the preliminaries with a fellow GNAC runner from Northwest Nazarene in Dakota Tidwell. A total of 31 competitors entered in the 60-meter men's hurdles.

Knapp traveled back to the University of Washington to compete in the Husky Classic where she ran to a time of 17:17.72 in the women's 5k to place 60th overall.

WOU will continue to compete in both the Boise State Challenge and the Husky Classic on Saturday.
