Women's basketball on wrong end of offensive shootout with Cavs

MONMOUTH, Ore. – In their second and final meeting of the year, the Concordia Cavaliers snapped their seven-game losing streak with an 83-73 win over the Western Oregon women's basketball team Tuesday night at NPE Gym.

Despite their best shooting night of the season overall and from 3-point range, Western Oregon (5-15, 2-11 GNAC) was unable to keep up with the Cavaliers offense who posted their highest-scoring game of the season.

CU scored the first points of the game as Abby Aplaca converted her jumper 36 seconds in, but the Wolves responded with an 11-0 run over the next five minutes to force a timeout. After trailing by as many as 11 in the first quarter, the Cavaliers bounced back to close the period on a 12-5 run to get within four heading to the second.

Western Oregon had one of their best shooting halves of the season in the first, hitting 58.1 percent of field goals on 31 attempts. Junior Keyonna Jones had 10 points before the break, adding on three assists and two rebounds to help grow the Wolves' lead to double figures. She finished the night with 16 points along with four boards and three dimes.

The Wolves inflated their first-half lead with a 22-12 advantage in the second quarter. They shot 10-for-15 from the field in the quarter for their highest percentage of the night. They would take a 14-point lead at 41-27 into the locker rooms at halftime.

The second half of play was a very different game with the Cavaliers nearly matching their first half scoring in the third quarter alone. After scoring just 27 in the first two quarters of the night, they posted 25 in the third and another 31 in the fourth to overcome a 14-point deficit. CU shot 52.9 percent from the field in the game, taking only eight 3-pointers in total.

Western Oregon was only able to score six points in the third quarter, losing their lead with 1:55 to play in the period and never recovering it.

Freshman Dorcas Wu led the comeback with 21 points, six assists, five steals, three rebounds and a block. It was a new season and career-high for Wu in points and assists while matching her previous high in steals.

Bench scoring helped bolster the Western Oregon offense in their highest-scoring game finished in regulation this season. Tresai McCarver led the Wolves with 18 points off the bench while Cali McClave chipped in another 10. In total, WOU got 37 points from their reserves.

The 51.7 percent field goal and 43.8 percent 3-point shooting were both single-game highs for the season for Western Oregon and the second time they have shot 50 percent from the field in their last three games. It was only the second time they have eclipsed 40 percent 3-point shooting this season and the first time since Dec. 5 on the road in Fairbanks. Their 9 attempted 3-pointers was the lowest of the season.

Next up, Western Oregon travels to Billings to take on MSUB on Thursday, Feb. 6. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. PST at Alterowitz Gym.
