MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon men's basketball team closes out a four-game road trip this week, visiting the Seattle Pacific Falcons and Saint Martin's Saints as they continue Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
Western Oregon (13-5, 7-5 GNAC) enters the week in a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings, sitting one game out of third and 1.5 games out of second. The Wolves are tied for the longest active win streak in the GNAC, having won three consecutive games dating back to Jan. 25.
This past week, Western breezed past the Concordia Cavaliers for a 111-78 victory before dismantling the MSUB Yellowjackets 98-75 in a pair of road games. Sophomore
Cameron Cranston led the team in scoring in both, combining for 46 points over the two contests. Cranston scored a career-high 29 last Saturday in Billings, adding on five rebounds, an assist and a steal in 31 minutes.
With the combined 209 points last week, the Wolves are now averaging a conference-best 88.1 points per game this season— 7.9 points better than any other team in the GNAC. They additionally hold the top spots in scoring margin (+10.7), free throw (.804), field goal (.501) and 3-point (.408) percentages.
Individually, WOU has four of the top 18 scorers in the GNAC with
Dalven Brushier (17.7), Cranston (14.2),
Darius Lubom (13.8) and
Jaylyn Richardson (13.1) leading the way in points per game.
Seattle Pacific (15-5, 11-1 GNAC) continues to hold on to first place in the conference, currently three games ahead of the second place Western Washington Vikings. The Falcons suffered their first conference loss of the season last week, 83-77 to the Alaska Nanooks on the road. The loss snapped a 14-game winning streak that dated back to Nov. 16.
SPU boasts the conference's top defense, allowing only 70.8 points per game while scoring 79.3 a night. They are shooting 49.3 percent from the field and 38.3 percent from 3-point range.
In their first meeting of the season, SPU was able to steal a 98-88 overtime win from the Wolves in Monmouth on Jan. 11. Western Oregon led by as many as 11 in the second half before the Falcons made a late run to push the game to OT. Seattle Pacific shot 52.6 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from three in the game.
WOU is 18-26 against SPU all-time. The Falcons have won three straight meetings since snapping a Western 10-game winning streak in the series. Western's last win against SPU was on Jan. 19, 2019, in Monmouth. Their last win in Seattle was on Jan. 13, 2018. They are 6-14 on the road in the series.
Saint Martin's (5-16, 3-9 GNAC) sits two games ahead of Concordia as they try to avoid last place in the GNAC standings. SMU's recent victory over Alaska in Fairbanks snapped a 12-game losing streak that began back on Dec. 19. The losing streak followed winning their first two GNAC games of the season, topping NNU and Central Washington before the slide.
SMU is led by the 14.9 points per game of Demonte Malloy and 14.3 of CJ Jennings. Marky Adams leads the conference with 8.7 rebounds per game and a 66.9 percent field goal mark.
In their first meeting of the season Western Oregon handled the Saints for a 108-73 win in Monmouth. The Wolves were led by the career-high 37 points of
Dalven Brushier.
WOU is 30-13 all-time against Saint Martin's. Western has won two straight and 13 of the last 15 meetings dating back to 2014. Western's last win in Lacey was on Jan. 11, 2018. They are 11-8 on the road in the series.
