MONMOUTH, Ore. – After beginning their season last week at the Desert Stinger in Las Vegas, the Western Oregon softball team will play their first home games of the 2020 campaign this weekend in a doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 8, against the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers at WOU Softball Field.
Western Oregon (2-3) looks to break a two-game slide after falling in their final pair of appearances at the Stinger. The Wolves earned wins over Sonoma State (5-1) and Colorado Christian (10-7) during the annual tournament while averaging over five runs per game.
Through the first five games of play, Western is hitting .366 as a team with a .580 slugging percentage and .475 on-base percentage. They have four team home runs, including two grand slams, and 17 total extra-base hits.
Defensively, they have an 8.18 team ERA in 31.2 innings, striking out 11 and walking 24. Their team fielding percentage sits at .963 with three of their five games being played without an error.
Individually, they are led by the .474 batting average of
Ayanna Arceneaux. The junior outfielder has accumulated nine hits in 19 at-bats, including a double and a triple. Arceneaux is one of three players for the Wolves hitting over .400, including the .429 mark of
Logan Carlos who leads the team with a .714 slugging percentage and a 1.214 OPS.
A trio of pitchers have already recorded at least 9.0 innings of work for Western, seeing multiple appearances from
Chandler Bishop,
Maddie Mayer and
Reilly Tidwell, all of whom have recorded starts.
Eastern Oregon will begin their season on Saturday, playing in back-to-back days as they will visit Pacific University on Sunday following their visit to Monmouth. The Mountaineers are coming off a 13-32 overall record in 2019, going 7-20 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference of the NAIA.
EOU was led last season by Brandi Bowling who hit .377 over 22 games. Despite five players hitting over .300, the Mountaineers hit just .266 as a team while opponents smashed a .335 batting average against them.
Saturday's doubleheader will be the fourth and fifth meetings between the two teams since Western Oregon joined the NCAA. WOU is 2-1 against EOU during that time, winning their last two meetings and not losing to Eastern since March 1, 2003. They have never played in Monmouth.
The twin bill will begin at 1 p.m. PST at WOU Softball field with the second game to follow 30 minutes after. Live stats will be
available here.
