SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Following five straight games to start the regular season in California, the Western Oregon University men's basketball team will be in Utah the rest of this week to face Fort Lewis on Friday at 4 p.m. (Pacific) and then host Westminster on Saturday at 6 p.m. (Pacific).
WOU (1-4) is coming off of three more road games in California where they picked up a dominating win over Sonoma State and then fell just short against Cal State East Bay and Humboldt State.
The Wolves are averaging 70.8 points, shooting 131-330 (39.7) from the field, 47-139 (33.8) from three and 45-63 (71.4) from the foul line. WOU adds 35.6 rebounds, 14 assists, 7.8 steals and three blocks per game. Opponents average 76 points, shooting 154-347 (44.4) from the field, 35-110 (31.8) from three and 37-55 (67.3) from the foul line. In addition, averaging 45.2 rebounds, 14.6 assists, 5.6 steals and 1.8 blocks per game.
Individually, Cameron Cranston leads the team in points per game (20.6), rebounds per game (5.8), steals (10), tied for the team lead in assists (11) and is shooting almost 43 percent from the field making 33 field goals. He adds 17 three-pointers and 20 free throws. Daisone Hughes and John Morrill-Keeler are tied at eight points apiece, with Hughes dishing out 10 assists and Morrill-Keeler at five rebounds per game. Yosani Clay is right behind with 7.8 points per game, along with 4.6 rebounds, nine assists and three steals. Elihu Cobb is shooting over 70 percent from the field, averaging seven points and leads the team with five blocks.
Nationally, WOU ranks 60th in the nation in three-point field goals per game (9.6), 36th in total three-point field goals made (48), 76th in total assists (68), 84th in total rebounds (178) and 64th in total steals (38). WOU ranks in the top-three in the GNAC in defensive rebounds per game coming in third (25.8), second in three-point field goals per game (9.6), second in three-point field goals made (48), third in total blocks (14), and second in total steals (38).
Individually, Cranston ranks 70th nationally and second in the GNAC in free throws made (20), 92nd and second in the GNAC in free throw percentage (87), 64th and second in the GNAC in minutes per game (35:31), 53rd and leads the GNAC in points per game (20.6), second in the GNAC in steals per game (2), 32nd and second in the GNAC in three-point field goals per game (3.4), 80th and third in the GNAC in three-point field goal percentage (45.9), 17th and second in the GNAC in three-point field goals made (17), 70th and second in the GNAC in total field goals made (33), 60th in total minutes (177:34), 37th and second in the GNAC in total points (103) and 66th and third in the GNAC in total steals (10).Cobb ranks fourth in the GNAC in blocked shots per game (1) and third in the GNAC in total blocks (5).
First up will be a meeting with Fort Lewis on Friday. This will be the second meeting between the teams and first since 2008 that the Skyhawks won 96-64 that also took place in Utah down in St. George. FLC plays in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and is located in Durango, Colo. The Skyhawks are 3-1 on the season, but are 1-1 against Division II teams defeating Eastern New Mexico and falling the Angelo State. This past week they played two home games picking up wins over University of the Southwest and Northern New Mexico.
On the season, FLC is averaging 91 points, shooting 118-233 (50.6) from the field, 26-81 (32.1) from three and 102-133 (76.7) from the foul line. The Skyhawks average 38.5 rebounds, 17.8 assists, 6.8 steals and 3.3 blocks per game. Opponents average78.8 points, shooting 118-258 (45.7) from the field, 33-81 (40.7) from three and 46-63 (73) from the foul line. Opponents also average 30.5 rebounds, 11.8 assists, 6.8 steals and 3.3 blocks per game.
Riley Farris is leading the way at 21.8 points per game, shooting over 64 percent from the field. He also adds 4.5 rebounds, seven assists and six blocks. Akuel Kot adds 12 points per game, Will Wittman at 11.3 points per game and 6.5 rebounds, Corey Seng at 11 points and 18 assists, while Brendan Boatwright gives the team five scoring in double-figures at 10.8 points and six rebounds.
WOU will finish the trip on Saturday night against host Westminster. The Wolves are 2-0 against the Griffins since 2016-17 winning both meetings that took place in St. George. The last meeting was in 2018-19 with WOU claiming the 68-59 victory. WC is also out of the RMAC.
The Griffins are 1-3 on the season with their one win coming at UT Permian Basin by a point. They lost by four to Western New Mexico and then played Lake Superior State twice on the road falling by 10 and then four in the second meeting. WC will host Central Washington on Friday before facing WOU the next day.
WC is averaging 70.3 points, shooting 96-201 (47.8) from the field, 25-71 (35.2) from three and 64-88 (72.7) from the foul line. The Griffins also average 35.8 rebounds, 14 assists, 2.5 steals and a block per game. Opponents average 74.5 points, shooting 98-224 (43.8) from the field, 32-96 (33.3) from three and 70-94 (74.5) from the foul line. Opponents also average 27.3 rebounds, 15.3 assists, seven steals and 2.3 blocks per game.
Yusuf Mohamed leads the team in scoring averaging 13.3 points and seven rebounds per contest. Jarrett Jordan adds 12.5 points, while both Reme Torbert and Lewis Johnson average over nine points per game. Mohamed, Jordan and Johnson are all shooting at least 50 percent from the field.
