MONMOUTH, Ore. – In another exciting day of events, the Western Oregon University men's and women's track and field teams hosted the second day of the John Knight Twilight on Saturday. During the meet, the Wolves also recognized the 14 senior student-athletes in Moana Gianotti, Adam Alnazer, Lauren Berry, Max Carmona, Karsten Collins, Owen Collins, Neal Cranston, Jalon Fields, Justin Crosswhite, Dominic Giordano, Makenzie Smith, Shayla Solomon, Darian Wilson and Michaela Yonkman.
Owen Collins helped start senior weekend competing in the men's discus hitting a new season-best mark of 136-2 to come in third.
Gianotti won the women's discus reaching a distance of 134-9. Krystal Andres also competed in the event coming in sixth.
To start the running events, Jenelle Hurley led the way for the Wolves crossing in fifth with a time of 15.86 in the women's 100-meter hurdles. It was the top mark for Hurley in the event racing it outside of the heptathlon, having run the 100-meter hurdles in the WOU Multi to start the outdoor season. Yonkman wasn't far off her personal-best in the event coming in seventh with a time of 16.38. Ana Popchock was right behind in eighth with a time of 16.61, Rilee Carstensen crossed in ninth with a time of 16.93. Smith came in 10th and Madeline Lambing in 11th rounded out the competitors from WOU.
In the men's 110-meter hurdles, Aaron Hanible posted a time of 16.16 to come in ninth.
Maya Hopwood and Berry had strong races in the women's 100-meter dash. Both set new personal-bests in the event coming in first and second. Hopwood came across with a first-place time of 12.25, just besting her previous top time of 12.28. Berry followed in second with a time of 13.13 for a new personal-best.
Dominique Loggins, running in his first 100-meter dash of the outdoor season in his career at WOU, had a strong showing coming in second with a time of 10.96. Jarren Ford ran in the event for the second time this outdoor season and was just off his season-best time crossing at 11.32 to place sixth. Jake Thompson also competed for the Wolves and came in 10th.
Solomon nearly won the women's 800-meter as she went right to the finish with Lane CC's Piper Crook with Crook crossing at 2:24.00 and Solomon in second at 2:24.13. Lindie Larson crossed in seventh in the event.
Crosswhite just missed hitting his personal-best in the men's 800-meter when he led the field coming in first with a time of 1:53.98. Hunter Hutton set a new personal-best in the event when he came in fourth with a time of 1:54.62. Emmett Klus wasn't far off his personal-best in the 800 when he came in fifth with a time of 1:57.23. Curt Knott, running in his first event of the outdoor season, came in sixth. WOU had several other runners also in the event with Wyatt Smith coming in eighth, Tim Rambo in ninth, Dustyn Mckenney in 10th, Trey Reed in 11th, Giordano in 12th, Carson Austin in 14th, Talon Aguilar in 16th, Matthew Schenk in 17th and Dominic Manzo in 19th.
Yonkman came in second in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.68. They ended up having to run the event twice after a timing situation halted the first attempt in progress. WOU also had Popchock and Carstensen entered who ran the first attempt, but didn't re-enter in the second attempt.
Hanible just missed hitting his personal-best in the men's 400-meter hurdles when he came in second with a time of 56.06.
Owen Collins and Sam Cole led the Wolves in the men's shot put with Owen just missing a new personal-best in the event when he hit a distance of 48-4.75 to come in second. Cole had the third-best throw on the day hitting a mark of 44-4.
Gianotti had the best throw for the Wolves in the women's shot put hitting the second-longest distance of 40-9.5 to come in second. Liliana Lyness-Morales came in fifth in the event.
Jalon Fields led the Wolves in the men's long jump when he hit a mark of 20-09.25 to come in fourth. He also entered in the men's triple jump reaching a distance of 44-01.50 to come in third. Marley Harrison entered in both events as well, hitting a distance of 19-11.75 in the long jump to place sixth and in the triple jump, he hit a mark of 44-00.50 to come in fourth. Eli Nafziger just missed reaching 6.00m in the event when he hit 5.99 (19-08.00) to come in eighth. Thompson came in 11th and Jacob Flury in 12th also competed for the Wolves.
Berry led the way for WOU in the women's long jump when she hit a mark of 16-00.25 to come in third. Lyndee McLauchlin hit a distance of 15-00.00 to come in eighth.
Popchock hit a new personal-best in the women's triple jump when she reached a distance of 36-3.5 to come in second.
Finishing out the day in the running events, Hopwood crossed in second in the women's 200-meter with a time of 26.43. Hurley was right behind setting a new personal-best in the event when she posted a time of 26.80 to come in third. Bethanie Altamirano was close to her personal-best time in the event coming in fifth with a time of 27.28.
Ford ran in his first outdoor men's 200-meter dash at WOU and was close to his indoor time in the event when he posted a time of 23.43 to come in eighth.
The relay teams concluded the day with the WOU women's 4x400 team came in second with a time of 4:15.03 with Popchock, Deters, Carstensen and Yonkman competing for the Wolves.
In the men's 4x400 relay team crossed in first with a time of 3:26.52 with Hanible, Crosswhite, Rambo and Hutton running for the Wolves.
WOU will return to action next Saturday (Apr. 17) when they will compete in both the Lane CC Invite (Eugene, OR) and the Central Washington Invite (Ellensburg, WA).
