MONMOUTH, Ore. – With Mike Peterson taking home both the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Pitcher of the Week honors, the Western Oregon University baseball team continued to climb up the NCBWA Regional Poll on Monday to third.
Peterson opened the weekend series for the Wolves with a solid eight inning performance holding Saint Martin's scoreless in a 4-0 win. He held the Saints to just a hit and a .043 batting average, working around three hit batters, added nine strikeouts and didn't walk a batter. Peterson also worked three 1-2-3 innings.
The Wolves climbed from fifth in last week's poll after going 4-0 against Saint Martin's this week to improve to 10-4 overall on the season. Azusa Pacific remains in the top spot with five first-place votes and 59 points, with Northwest Nazarene also collecting a first-place vote and 55 points in second. Academy of Art and Point Loma are tied for fourth with 34 points, followed by Central Washington (24 points), Holy Names (23 points), Concordia Irvine (20 points) Fresno Pacific (17 points) and Hawaii Hilo (15 points).
WOU will return to action this coming Friday when they will open another four-game GNAC series at No. 15 Northwest Nazarene beginning at 3 p.m.
