TURLOCK, Calif. – Coming off of a season-opening series in California against Fresno Pacific, the Western Oregon University baseball team returns to the Golden State this week to face Stanislaus State in a four-game series that starts Friday at 5 p.m. The teams will also play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. and then the series finale on Sunday at noon.
WOU (2-2) split their four-game series with the Sunbirds taking the first two games by scores of 13-5 and 6-3. After Fresno Pacific claimed the third game at 13-0, the teams went right to the end in the finale before the Sunbirds came away with the 6-5 victory.
Spencer Weston is off to a strong start hitting .417 with five hits, five runs scored, two doubles and three RBI. He is also tied for the team lead in walks with four. Jacob Maiben, Anthony Zellner and Jackson Holstad are all hitting .308 on the season. Jacob Maiben has a triple, four runs scored and is tied with Weston for the team lead in walks at four. Zellner had a double and three RBI. Holstad has three RBI and a double on the season. He also has a team-high two stolen bases. Derek Maiben is at .286 on the season with two RBI.
On the mound, Matthew Dunaway picked right back where he left off last season throwing four scoreless innings and added nine strikeouts. Bryce Bond had a strong debut for the Wolves going three innings without allowing a run and added two strikeouts. Michael Moore went 3.1 innings and allowed just one run with two strikeouts. Parker Johnson and Arturo Alvarez each tallied wins this past week. Johnson went 2.2 innings in relief to get the win in two appearances and added three strikeouts. Alvarez started and went five innings for the win, allowing just two earned runs with five strikeouts. Chris Hardin came away with a save in 2.1 innings and posted a strikeouts.
WOU is 22-7 against Stanislaus State since 2002 and won the most recent meeting in 2013 taking the 5-4 victory in extra innings. The Wolves are 10-2 at home and 12-5 on the road during that time.
Stanislaus State is 1-0 on the season having played Academy of Art this past week taking the 5-3 win in Turlock. Alex Solis is hitting .500 with an RBI. Joseph Hauck and Casey Carr added .333 averages and an RBI each. Trevor McInerney leads the team with two RBI.
On the mound, Maxwell Pappas started and got the win going five innings and allowing three earned runs with four strikeouts. Tony Jacob got the save going the final four innings and didn't allow a run with five strikeouts.
Following the trip to Stanislaus State, WOU will return to Monmouth for the home openers against Eastern Oregon on Saturday, Feb. 19 with a doubleheader starting at noon at the WOU Baseball Field.
