MONMOUTH, Ore. – The final homestand of the regular season is here for the Western Oregon university women's basketball team as they will play a total of three games within a five day stretch. WOU will open the week on Thursday against Central Washington at 7:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, which will also be Senior Day, the Wolves will face Northwest Nazarene at 2 p.m. To close the homestand, WOU will host Seattle Pacific on Monday beginning at 5:15 p.m. All games will be played inside New PE Gym.
Saturday will be Senior Day for the four WOU seniors in Amber Winkler, Kaelin Williams-Kennedy, Casandra White and Makenna Gambee.
Entering this week, Winkler has played in 64 games, logging 1,253 minutes, tallying 196 points, 86 blocks, 195 rebounds, 56 assists and 29 steals playing her entire career at Western Oregon. She went for a season-high 12 points twice this season against Saint Martin's and Northwest Nazarene. Pulled down at least five or more rebounds in six games, reaching a high of seven against Alaska Fairbanks. Winkler sent back multiple blocks eight times this year reaching a high of six against Alaska Fairbanks. She also had multiple steals in a game four times coming away with two in four different games.
Entering this week, Williams-Kennedy has played in 19 games with the Wolves, tallying 88 points, 40 rebounds, 13 steals, seven assists and a block while playing 231 minutes. She grabbed seven rebounds against Northwest Nazarene and has 10 games with multiple rebounds, dished out a season-high two assists twice and came away with two steals in a game five times. She went for a season-high 12 points against Hawaii Pacific and reached double-digits in scoring four times. Prior to a redshirt season in 2019-20 at WOU, Williams-Kennedy played at Pierce CC seeing time in 28 games, averaging 10.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. She scored a career-high 30 points against South Puget Sound.
Entering this week, White has played in 16 games, coming away with 34 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and three steals while playing 123 minutes. White scored a season-high nine points against Alaska Fairbanks hitting a trio of three-pointers in the fourth quarter to lead WOU to the win. She has multiple rebounds in a game three times, going for a high of three versus Simon Fraser and added two steals against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Prior to transferring to WOU, White played at Peninsula Junior College where she shot over 42 percent from three-point range, averaging just over seven points per game and 4.4 rebounds seeing time in 21 games as a true freshman. Her sophomore season had White averaging 10.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and see time in 25 games.
Entering this week, Gambee has played in 17 games, coming away with 78 points, 45 rebounds, 14 assists, eight steals and three blocks while playing 334 minutes. She reached a season-high 10 points against Saint Martin's and pulled down at least two rebounds in 11 games, reaching a season-high six against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Gambee dished out three assists in a game twice, has a block in three games and a steal in eight games. Prior to transferring to WOU, Gambee played at Hawaii Pacific for four years. Throughout her career, Gambee saw time in 102 games, scoring 363 points, 303 rebounds, 101 assists, 37 steals and 29 blocks. Gambee also spent time playing for the Hawaii Pacific volleyball team seeing time in 48 matches and 92 sets, coming away with 86 kills and 55 blocks.
WOU enters the week 8-12 overall and 4-9 in GNAC play. With the GNAC using a points rating system to decide the GNAC Tournament seeding, the Wolves are currently eighth in the standings entering the week with a 2.69 rating. Seattle Pacific is in seventh at 2.92 and Simon Fraser in sixth at 3.05. Saint Martin's is in ninth at 2.25, just ahead of Alaska Fairbanks at 2.23. All 10 teams will make the GNAC Championships this season, with the first round taking place on March 2 with the seven through 10 seeds playing to advance to the final eight field.
WOU is averaging 63.5 points, making 459-1,186 (38.7) from the field, 106-380 (27.9) from three and 246-354 (69.5) at the foul line. The Wolves also average 38.9 rebounds, 13.5 assists, 8.4 steals and 5.1 blocks per game. Opponents average 65.8 points, making 453-1,176 (38.5) from the field, 124-391 (31.7) from three and 286-417 (68.6) at the foul line. Opponents average 36.7 rebounds, 13.3 assists, 8.9 steals and 2.7 blocks per game.
Meadow Aragon leads the team in points per game (10.9), rebounds (7.2), blocks (33), field goal percentage (51.8) making 71-137 from the field and field goals (71). Tresai McCarver leads the team in assists (76) and free throws (62), while ranking second on the team in points per game (10.5) and in field goals (65). Cali McClave leads the team with 24 three-pointers, while averaging 8.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 42 assists, a team-high 34 steals and third on the team in field goals (62). Madisyn Clark is at 7.3 points, along with 2.0 rebounds and is second on the team with 18 three-pointers. She also has 38 assists, nine steals and 39 field goals. Alexis Wright adds 5.2 points and 3.7 rebounds, along with 10 blocks, nine assists and seven steals. She is shooting over 48 percent (46-95) from the field. Gambee, Williams-Kennedy are both at 4.6 points per game and Winkler is at 4.2 points. Winkler is second on the team in blocks with 28.
WOU will begin the week on Thursday against Central Washington. The Wildcats won the earlier meeting in Ellensburg, 74-55, back on Jan. 22. McCarver led the Wolves with 10 points and six rebounds. Clark and Aragon added eight points apiece.
CWU is 16-6 overall and 9-4 in GNAC play, going 10-4 away from home and 8-3 in true road contests. This past week, the Wildcats rolled to a 92-69 win over Simon Fraser and then went right down to the buzzer against Western Washington with the Vikings taking the 72-74 victory.
The Wildcats are averaging 73.7 points, making 576-1,343 (42.9) from the field, 197-587 (33.6) from three and 272-358 (76) at the foul line. CWU also averages 39.5 rebounds, 16.2 assists, 6.3 steals and 2.8 blocks. Opponents average 66.3 points, making 577-1,425 (40.5) from the field, 128-428 (29.9) from three and 176-256 (68.8) from the foul line. Opponents also average 35.5 rebounds, 14.5 assists, 7.5 steals and 2.6 blocks per game.
Kassidy Malcolm is averaging 19.5 points and 6.4 rebounds to lead the way, along with 31 assists and is shooting over 5 0percent from the field. Kizzah Maltezo is at 19.1 points and 2.5 rebounds, adding 68 assists, 39 steals and 62 three-pointers. Samantha Bowman tallies 15.6 points and 15.9 rebounds, along with 46 blocks, 53 assists and 29 blocks while making 51 percent from the field.
WOU has gone 8-12 at home against CWU since 2001 as the Wildcats have won the past six meetings in Monmouth. The last home win for the Wolves was in 2013 taking the 71-63 overtime victory.
The Wolves will face Northwest Nazarene on Saturday afternoon. WOU nearly pulled off the road win in Nampa back on Jan. 20 before the Nighthawks took the 73-66 victory. Winkler tallied 12 points, while Cali McClave and Williams-Kennedy added 11 points apiece.
Northwest Nazarene is 13-7 overall and 7-5 in GNAC play, going 5-5 on the road and 4-4 in true road contests. This past weekend, the Nighthawks picked up a big 77-70 overtime win over Western Washington and then fell to Simon Fraser to close the week, 96-86. Both games were in Nampa.
NNU is averaging 73 points, making 525-1,270 (41.3) from the field, 90-336 (26.8) from three and 319-457 (69.8) from the foul line. The Nighthawks also average 41.1 rebounds, 14.1 assists, 10.9 steals and 1.6 blocks. Opponents average 67.4 points, making 463-1,199 (38.6) from the field, 146-466 (31.3) from three and 275-397 (69.3) at the foul line. Opponents also average 37.8 rebounds, 14.0 assists, 9.7 steals and 2.2 blocks.
Nyalam Thabach leads the team at 13.1 points per game, along with 7.3 rebounds. She also adds 16 blocks, 15 assists and 14 steals and is shooting almost 50 percent from the field. Erin Jenkins is at 11.8 points and 5.5 rebounds, along with 29 assists and is shooting 49 percent from the field. Teagan Thurman is at 11.6 points, along with 8.1 rebounds and has 21 steals and 20 assists. Jordan Pinson is close to double-figures at 9.2 points and has 72 assists.
WOU has gone 6-13 at home against NNU since 2001 as the Nighthawks have won the past five meetings in Monmouth. The last home win for the Wolves was in 2015 taking the 69-55 victory.
To close the three-game homestand, the Wolves will welcome Seattle Pacific to town on Monday.
WOU and SPU played each other just last week with the Falcons taking the 67-54 win in Seattle on Feb. 10. Princy Paaluhi-Caulk went for a game-high 17 points, while McCarver and Cali McClave added nine points apiece.
Seattle Pacific enters the week 10-13 overall and 6-7 in GNAC play, going 3-8 in road games and 2-6 in true road contests. This past week, SPU defeated WOU and then lost in overtime to Saint Martin's, 58-51.
The Falcons average 59.3 points, making 510-1,308 (39) from the field, 122-421 (29) from three and 223-318 (70.1) from the foul line. SPU also averages 38.8 rebounds, 13.6 assists, 6.9 steals and 3.3 blocks. Opponents average 59.1 points, making 478-1,385 (34.5) from the field, 149-485 (30.7) from three and 255-343 (74.3) at the foul line. Opponents also average 36.2 rebounds, 10.2 assists, 8.8 steals and 2.8 blocks per game.
Ashley Alter leads the team averaging 12.1 points, 4.0 rebounds and 24 assists. Natalie Hoff is at 11.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and has 14 blocks. Kaprice Boston is at 7.9 points and Anna Eddy is at 7.7 points.
WOU is 3-17 at home against SPU since 2001 and the teams split the past two meetings. The Falcons won the most recent meeting in Monmouth, 55-53, but WOU claimed the 60-53 during the 2018-19 season in Monmouth.
