NEW ORLEANS – The Western Oregon University men's and women's track and field teams were well represented on the U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region Teams that were announced this week. The top-five individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region distinction.
WOU had four earn honors on the men's side in Sam Cole (weight throw and shot put), Owen Collins (weight throw and shot put), Hunter Hutton (mile) and JJ Walker (pole vault).
Cole put together a pair of strong showings at the GNAC Indoor Championships in both of the throwing events. He set a new PR in the weight throw hitting a mark of 54-2 to come in second. He then added a mark of 48-6 in the shot put to come in third.
Collins was right there with Cole throughout the championships. He set PR marks in both of the throwing events at GNAC's when he hit a distance of 49-3.75 in the shot put to come in second. He then added a throw of 52-4.75 in the weight throw to place fourth.
It was a steady climb in the mile throughout the indoor season for Hutton and the season ended with him winning the event at the GNAC Championships. In three different meets throughout the season, Hutton ran the mile around 4:07, eventually setting his new PR and top-10 all-time program mark of 4:07.05 at the Husky Classic.
Walker saved his best showing in the pole vault for last at the GNAC Championships. After hitting a height of 13-11.25 in the event during his solid heptathlon performance, Walker turned back around the next day to reach a new mark of 14-11 in the pole vault to come in second at GNAC's to earn All-Region honors. It was also a strong showing for him in the heptathlon at the championships, as he came in third and moved into the all-time WOU record books with 4,463 points.
It was a big GNAC Championships for the Wolves as the women's team collected 115 points to come in second and the men tallied 107.33 points to come in third.
