PORTLAND, Ore. – It was another strong showing in the classroom for the Western Oregon University softball team with eight being named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Team.
Logan Carlos and Maddie Brandner are on the list for the third straight year, while Zoie Recolan and Baylie Kahele are on the team for a second time. Joining them this year includes Natalie Willoughby, Hannah Stewart, Sophie Franklin and Reilly Tidwell.
Carlos holds a 3.68 GPA while majoring in communication. It's been a big year for the senior shortstop from Mililani, Hawaii as she leads the team with a .394 average, coming away with 52 hits, 29 runs, seven doubles, five triples, eight home runs and 30 RBI while starting all 38 games. She also has 15 walks and a stolen base. Carlos leads the team in hits, triples, RBI and is tied for the team lead in walks. She is second on the team in home runs and runs scored. Carlos drove in a season-high four against Montana State Billings and has eight games with multi-RBI contests. Carlos also has multiple hits in 16 games this season, going for at least three in a game five times.
Brandner holds a 3.41 GPA while majoring in exercise science. The senior utility player from Pasco, Wash., has seen time in multiple positions throughout her career and this year has settled in as the designated player. She has played in 17 games, that includes 12 starts, coming away with three hits, two RBI and a run scored. Brandner also has five walks. She tallied hits against Saint Martin's, Dominican (CA) and Stanislaus State and added RBI against Dominican (CA) and Saint Martin's.
Recolan holds a 3.60 GPA while majoring in community health. The senior first baseman from Ewa Beach, Hawaii has put together another big season for the Wolves. Playing in 36 games that includes 35 starts, Recolan is hitting .352 with 38 hits, 14 runs, 10 doubles, a triple, a home run and 15 RBI. She also has 14 walks and is 3-3 in stolen bases. Recolan has 10 multi-hit games this season, including a season-high four against Montana State Billings. She added multi-RBI games against Hawaii Hilo with three and two against Montana State Billings.
Kahele holds a 3.37 GPA while majoring in exercise science. The senior catcher from Mililani, Hawaii started 12 games this season before an injury sidelined the rest of the year. Prior to her injury, Kahele tallied five hits, three runs, five RBI and five walks. She posted a pair of two-hit games against Hawaii Hilo and Hawaii Pacific and drove in three runs against Hawaii Pacific.
Willoughby holds a 3.86 GPA while majoring in business. The sophomore catcher from Junction City, Ore., has put together an impressive season so far. Playing in 34 games that includes 33 starts, Willoughby has a .380 average with 38 hits, 30 runs, 10 doubles, 10 home runs, 29 RBI and 14 walks. She leads the team in home runs and runs scored and is second in RBI and doubles. Willoughby has 11 multi-hit games, tallying three hits versus Montana State Billings. She also has seven multi-RBI games, driving in five (twice) against Bushnell and Montana State Billings. Willoughby also has a pair of multi-home run games hitting two against Bushnell and Montana State Billings.
Stewart holds a 3.67 GPA while majoring in community health. The sophomore outfielder from Oregon City, Ore., has played in 15 games this season that includes eight starts before an injury sidelined the past few weeks. She has three hits, six runs, an RBI and a pair of walks, along with a stolen base. Stewart posted hits against Bushnell, Hawaii Hilo and Hawaii Pacific and drove in a run against the Sharks.
Franklin holds a 3.66 GPA while majoring in social science. The sophomore outfielder from Camas, Wash., has put together a big season playing in 36 games that includes 32 starts. She is hitting .314 with 27 hits, 16 runs, six doubles, two triples, 15 RBI, seven walks and has five stolen bases. Franklin has seven multi-hit games, going for a season-high three against Dominican (CA). She drove in two runs each against Chaminade, Simon Fraser, Warner Pacific and Hawaii Pacific.
Tidwell holds a 3.33 GPA while majoring in community health. The senior right-hander from Marana, Ariz., has pitched in 13 games this season that includes 11 starts. She holds a 3.58 ERA in 58.2 innings, going 3-4 with three complete games and 42 strikeouts. Tidwell tossed a season-high 11 innings in the marathon extra inning win against Montana State Billings while posting 10 strikeouts. She also pitched six innings each against Warner Pacific, Chaminade, Saint Martin's and Simon Fraser. Tidwell has multiple strikeouts in nine games, picking up five or more in three games. She also added wins against Warner Pacific and Saint Martin's.
