MONMOUTH, Ore. – With the Western Oregon University football team in their third week of spring practices, the Wolves are preparing for a pair of scrimmages and the upcoming spring game in the next few weeks. The team will be holding scrimmages this Saturday (Apr. 30) and the following Saturday (May 7) with both starting at 10 a.m. at McArthur Field. The spring will culminate with the annual spring game on May 14 at 2 p.m. at McArthur Field.
With seven practices now in the rear-view mirror, the Wolves are starting to see where they are entering the final few weeks.
"Overall this spring has been very good. We still have a lot of things to work on, but it has been a productive spring and has given a lot of players a chance to gain experience," head coach Arne Ferguson said.
Several of the experienced players have been having strong springs.
"Marquis Sampson, Thomas Wright, Damon Hickok, Logan Reese, London Smalley and Keyvaun Eady have all led an impressive wide receiver group that have performed well this spring. Omari Land has led the running backs and looks strong once again," Ferguson said.
The linebackers have started strong as well, along with returners in the secondary making more contributions.
"Jaylin Parnell, Malcolm Liufau and Joey Sinclair are off to strong starts and have been leading the defense," Ferguson said.
The team has been adjusting to not having a lot of offensive lineman so far this spring and the quarterback battle continues to heat up.
"We've been creative along the offensive line and as we get pieces back, you can start to see everything take shape. The quarterbacks are getting better and making good progress. We look forward to seeing the continued progression as camp goes along," Ferguson said.
With this year's spring feeling more normal after the previous two years, it is starting to show with the excitement and level of intensity during each practice.
"The players have been excited this spring and with it being a little more normal, I think that's helped a lot as well," Ferguson said. "We're excited for the last few weeks as we get close to the spring game."
