MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon football team had its chances and stayed within striking distance of Texas A&M-Kingsville, but couldn't get over the hump and fell 34-27 on a rainy and muddy Saturday afternoon at McArthur Field.
The Wolves (3-7 overall, 2-5 Lone Star Conference) had a chance in the fourth quarter against the Javelinas (6-3, 4-3) as with 4:43 remaining in the contest

London Smalley for a 19-yard touchdown pass to make it 27-20.Â
WOU got a stop on defense, getting the ball back with 2:33 left on the 20-yard line, but an interception on the first play to make that was returned for a touchdown made it 34-20 and dashed comeback hopes.
The Wolves did have a last chance as
Kainoa Jones came in at quarterback and guided the Wolves down the field - capped by a Jones 13-yard rushing touchdown with 30 seconds remaining. However, a well-executed onside kick by
Charlie Shulkin was scooped up by the Javelinas and ended the contest.
The Wolves actually outgained the Javelinas in the contest 360-277 - but four turnovers by WOU hurt their chances.
Winker finished 13-for-36 for 208 yards and a touchdown, Jones was 2-for-5 for 47 yards while rushing for another 23 yards and
Jordan McCarty was 1-for-1 for 11 yards and rushed for another three.
Keyvaun Eady had four receptions for 78 yards,
Brenden Hodge finished with four catches for 67 yards,
Kade Hustler had two receptions for 45 yards and Smalley had three catches for 42 yards and a score. On the ground,
Dominique Loggins had 36 yards rushing and a score while
Austin Bacher added 32 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively,
Malcolm Liufau had eight tackles, a half sack, a forced fumble, a blocked kick, a pass breakup and two quarterback hurries,
Isaiah Abraham had eight tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack,
Tyler Copeland had eight tackles while
Aden Murphy had five tackles (one for a loss) and an interception that he returned 18 yards.
WOU closes out the season at Angelo State in San Angelo, Texas, next Saturday.
