ELLENSBURG, Wash. --- The Western Oregon baseball team picked up a pair of GNAC wins on the road Sunday, defeating Central Washington 6-3 and 5-2 at CWU Baseball Field.
The Wolves (8-6, 4-2) in game one led 3-0 after two thanks to a pair of runs in the second on Jacob and
Derek Maiben RBI singles. CWU slowly chipped away and tied the game at 3-3 i the sixth inning on a WOU error (one of three in the game for the Wolves).
But the Wolves put two on before
AJ Cortese blasted a three-run homer to left to give WOU the lead for good.
The WOU pitching gave up just one hit in game one as
Arturo Alvarez went 5.2 innings and gave up three runs (one earned) on one hit with a strikeout and two walks.
Ryan Shipley was again sensational in relief - pitching 3.1 perfect innings with three strikeouts to pick up the win.
Jacob and
Derek Maiben each had three hits in the first game iwth Jacob scoring twice and both adding an RBI (Derek also had a stolen base).while Cortese finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and a homer,
Justyn Herzog went 2-for-4 and
Collin Irwin was 2-for-4.
In game two the Wolves again took an early 2-0 lead after two from a Herzog two-run homer to right. Herzog homered again to right to in the fourth to make it 3-0 before CWU (6-15, 2-4) answered with a run in the fourth. The Wolves added a run in the sixth on a Cortese RBI single and a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from
Randy Stultz to make the final 5-2.
Bryce Bond was stellar on the mound for the Wolves, going 6.2 innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk to move to 2-0 on the season.
Sebasten Boivin got the final out of the game to pick up his second save.
Herzog finished 2-for-3 with two homers and three RBI while Cortese was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.
Derek Maiben went 0-for-3 to have his 17-game hitting streak snapped.
The Wolves and Wildcats play another doubleheader Saturday.
