Wolves win wild one in final seconds at West Texas A&M

CANYON, Texas --- Gannon Winker hit Brenden Hodge on a slant for a 2-yard touchdown pass with two seconds remaining to give Western Oregon a 37-36 victory over West Texas A&M on Saturday evening at Buffalo Stadium.

The Wolves (2-3 overall, 1-2 LSC) had trailed for just 54 seconds in the game before the Buffaloes (2-3, 1-2) scored with 5:31 remaining to take a 36-30 advantage on WOU.

There was no panic in the Wolves, however, as starting on its own 31, WOU ran the ball four times to start the drive to get it to the WTAM 47. Two plays later is when Winker hit tight end Kade Hustler wit ha 41-yard strike to take the ball down to the West Texas 9. The wolves rushed the ball three times down to the 2-yard line with six seconds remaining when a timeout was called.

The Wolves spread the field and Winker hit Hodge just to his left in the end zone for the score to tie the game with two seconds left before Charlie Shulkin kicked the pressure-packed extra point to give WOU a one-point lead.

WOU held on in the final seconds with the Buffs missing a field goal as time expired as the Wolves picked up their first Lone Star Conference win of the season.

WOU dominated possession, holding the ball 37:33 compared to 19:40 for the Buffs as the Wolves ran 70 plays compared to 51 for West Texas. WOU outgained the the Buffs 374-315.

Winker finished the game 13-for-19 for 232 yards and three touchdowns passing while adding a rushing score. Keyvaun Eady was his main target, snagging five receptions for 100 yards and a score. Hodge had three catches for 63 yards and two scores. Dominique Loggins led the ground game, carrying the ball 32 times for 121 yards and a score.

Defensively, Muggy Dawson led the team with seven tackles, Malcolm Liufau had six tackles and a sack while Andrew Simpson, Xavier Owens and Isaiah Abraham had five tackles apiece.
