ALASKA, Anchorage --- Western Oregon women's basketball and Alaska Anchorage headed into Thursday night heading in two different directions with the Wolves having dropped four straight overall and 37-straight to UAA while the Seawolves had won nine straight heading into the contest.
But there's a reason they play the games.
WOU bounced back from a seven-point deficit after the first quarter by outscoring UAA 57-30 the rest of the way - including 24-8 in the fourth quarter - beat the Seawolves for the first time since Dec. 6, 2003, in a 73-53 victory at Alaska Airlines Center.
The Wolves (10-9 overall, 3-5 GNAC) held a 49-45 lead over UAA (11-6, 5-3) heading into the fourth quarter before a bucket by the Seawolves cut the lead to two points with 8:53.
It would be UAA's last field goal of the game, however, as WOU ignited by a
Cali McClave layup went on a 16-2 run capped by a
Bella Pedrojetti 3-pointer with 4:07 left in the game to make it 65-49 Wolves.
WOU cruised from there to end the 20-year losing streak to the Seawolves.
Pedrojetti paced the Wolves with 17 points, going 4-for-5 from 3-point range. McClave filled the stat sheet with 15 points, a game-high eight assists and five steals along with three rebounds. Trinit Youngblood stuffed the stat sheet as well with 10 points, six rebounds, six assists, four steals and two blocks.
The Wolves head back to the court Saturday against Alaska in Fairbanks.
