FAIRBANKS, Alaska --- The Western Oregon women's basketball team stayed close to Alaska throughout, and had a record performance from
Cali McClave, but the Wolves fell short in overtime 77-73 Saturday at Alaska Airlines Gymnasium.
The Wolves (10-10 overall, 3-6 GNAC) started the game strong, trailing the Nanooks (4-15, 2-7) by only seven going into the half. In the third the lead changed hands three times with two ties, creating what would become a dramatic fourth quarter.
WOU took the lead with just under three minutes remaining after layups from
Kiylynn Dawkins and McClave. But after an Alaska score with 1:20 remaining tied the game, the WOU defense took charge and kept the game tied till the end of regulation and forced WOU's second overtime game this season.
In overtime, both Dawkins and McClave fouled out, but not after McClave put up 31 points to break her single-game career scoring record (previously 29, set twice last season). Ultimately the Wolves would lose this contest after some late-game scoring and defense from Alaska.
Dawkins finished with 14 points as the only other Wolf in double figures while
Triniti Youngblood ended the contest with 10 assists and 5 rebounds to go along with her six points.
The Wolves close out a three-game road stretch Saturday at Saint Martin's before return home to take on Montana State Billings on Feb. 8.
