MONMOUTH, Ore. --- It wasn't pretty, but the Western Oregon women's basketball team used a strong second-half effort to defeat Saint Martin's 54-50 to move the Wolves' win streak to six - the longest for the program since 2001.
After a sluggish first half that saw the Saints (2-8 overall, 0-3 GNAC) lead WOU (9-5, 2-1) 18-14 at the break as the two teams combined for more turnovers (20) as field goals (12).
The Wolves eventually tied the game at 31 in the third after a
Cali McClave steal and layup with 3:05 left in the period before SMU went on a 7-0 run to end the quarter and lead 38-31 heading into the fourth.
WOUÂ fought back and eventually took its first lead since 6-5 early in the first quarter when McClave hits a jumper at the 2:42 mark in the fourth to make it 49-48.
The Wolves wouldn't trail again as buckets by
Bella Pedrojetti and
Triniti Youngblood along with a free throw by
Ally Harman put the game away.
The Wolves forced 23 Saints turnovers in the contest (12 in the first half, 11 in the second half) and used that to outscore SMU 16-9 on points off turnovers (WOU committed 12 in the game and only in the fourth).
McClave paced WOU with 18 points to go along with seven rebounds and four steals.
Kiylynn Dawkins finished with her fifth-straight double-double and sixth on the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
WOU hits the road next week as it travels to take on Seattle Pacific on Thursday night and Montana State Billings on Saturday.
