MIDLAND, Texas --- The Western Oregon football team rallied from an early deficit, a late deficit and used clutch plays from a sophomore and a freshman to secure a 30-27 overtime victory over defending Lone Star Conference champion University of Texas Permian Basin on Saturday at Astound Broadband Stadium.
It's the Wolves' fifth win in a row to move to 5-0 in LSC play and stay atop the standings with Angelo State.
It was a back and forth game in which WOU trailed 14-0 after the first quarter, scored 20 points in the second quarter to take a 20-14 lead only to see UTPB (4-4, 3-3) score 13 unanswered and lead the Wolves 27-20 halfway through the fourth quarter.
WOU started a drive with 6:29 remaining on the UTPB 44 and started teh drive with four consecutive
Dominique Loggins rushes for 32 yards to get the ball down to the Falcons 12. Four plays later, quarterback
Jordan McCarty rushed around the left side for a touchdown to tie the game.
Both teams got the ball one more time, but neither scored and the game went to overtime.
UTPB got the ball first and had the ball third and nine from the WOU 14 when WOU sophomore
Tyler Copeland used his 6-foot-4 frame to leap stretch out high and intercept a pass in the end zone - meaning the Wolves just needed to score on its possession starting at the 25 to win the game.
The Wolves pounded the ball on the ground with down to the UTPB 11 where true freshman kicker
Keaton Emmett drilled his third field goal of the game - this one from 29 yards out - to win it for the Wolves.
WOU used its ground game to control the clock - rushing for 212 yards on 62 carries - to hold the ball for 40 minutes, 59 seconds of the game (compared to 19:01 for the Falcons). Overall, the Wolves ran 86 plays compared to 52 for UTPB.
Loggins led the ground game with 137 yards on 25 carries. McCarty finished 8-for-12 for 71 yards and a touchdown passing while rushing for 20 yards and another score.
Kainoa Jones was also 8-for-12 passing for 59 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 27 yards.
Damon Hickok had a team-high five catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.
Emmett finished 3-for-3 on field goals (including a season-best 48 yards) while also going 3-for-3 on extra points.
Copeland finished tied a team-high with four tackles to go along with an interceptions while Daron Ulrich also had four tackles.
The Wolves return home this Saturday to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville for homecoming.
