MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon volleyball team swept Saint Martin's 3-0 (25-9, 25-23, 25-21) on Thursday in the New PE Building. WOU - which entered the match fourth in the nation in total aces - compiled 10 aces in the match, bring their total to 231 in the season.
The Wolves (14-9 overall, 6-8 GNAC) took set one from the Saints (5-17, 3-11) in commanding fashion, starting the set on a 12-3 run and holding SMU to nine points.
In set two, WOU and SMU locked in a battle, trading the lead before a
Sidney Friesen ace gave WOU the lead for good. On the next point the Wolves took the set in dramatic fashion thanks to a successful challenge by head coach
Kaiao Nahale-a that reversed a SMU kill, giving WOU the set 25-23. In set three the Wolves and Saints traded points early before WOU went on a 11-3 run to take the lead.
Madison Hornback put the exclamation point on the match with a kill to close out the third set.
Maela Honma finished with a .526 hitting percentage (12 kills, two errors, 19 attempts), 11 digs, and two aces. Hornback ended with an even 10 kills, three blocks and a WOU-high 17 digs while
Chloe Asciutto had eight kills and three blocks. Friesen finished with four aces and 10 digs while
Kealani Rosa had a team-best 21 assists.
Samantha Darby had 14 assists and two aces while
Finley Buman had four blocks.
The Wolves are off Saturday and take the court again 7 p.m. Thursday against Montana State Billings in New PE.
