SAN DIEGO --- Western Oregon men's soccer head coach and back-to-back GNAC Coach of the Year
Michael Behonick was selected as one of the coaches at the 2024 Major League Soccer College Showcase taking place Wednesday through Saturday in San Diego, California.
The showcase features 44 of the top college players in the country as they will take part in training sessions, testing, interviews and match play. The event is ahead of the 2025 MLS SuperDraft on Dec. 20.
Behonick is familiar with the showcase as he not only took part in the event last season and during his time as an assistant coach at Pitt, but was a player at the showcase in 2003 after a standout career at American University. He'd go on to play professionally for seven years as a goalkeeper - spending time with MLS clubs DC United and the New York Red Bulls, NASL side Puerto Rico Islanders and USL side Charleston Battery - winning a USL championship with Charleston.
Behonick garnered his second GNAC Coach of the Year honor in two seasons in 2024 thanks to leading the Wolves to their first GNAC title, first national ranking and NCAA Championships appearance and win in the program's third year of existence at the NCAA level. WOU went 14-5-1 this season, was ranked as high as No. 10 in the nation (ranked the final six weeks of the polls - finishing at No. 14) and won its first NCAA Championships game in its first appearance - a 2-0 win over Point Loma in the opening round before losing to top seed CSU-Pueblo in round two, 3-2, on a goal in the final minutes.
Overall, Behonick is 25-8-4 in his two seasons at WOU - taking over a program that went 2-13-2 in its inaugural season the year before his arrival. He's coached five all-region players and 12 all-conference players.
