MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon women's basketball team never trailed - though the lead was down to one in the fourth - during a 62-52 win over Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday at New PE Building.
The Wolves (5-5 overall) held a 40-39 lead over the Lumberjacks (3-7) early in the fourth quarter before a
Natalie Brown bucket ignited an 8-0 run to capped by an
Enid Vaifanua basket with 6:49 remaining to make it 48-39. WOU eventually took its largest lead of the game at 56-43 after a pair of
Salma Youngblood free throws as the Wolves led by no less than nine points the rest of the way.
WOU's defense was key as the Wolves help CPH to 29.2 percent shooting from the field - including 16.7 percent from 3-point range (6-for-36 including 0-for-10 in the fourth quarter).
Vaifanua and
Bella Pedrojetti led WOU with 14 points with Vaifanua adding five rebounds and four assists and Pedrojetti adding four rebounds and three assists.
Natalie Brown just missed another double-double as the conferences' leading rebounder had a game-high 12 boards to go along with nine points while
Ciona Wells had nine points, six rebounds and a team-best five assists and
Salma Youngblood added a season-high nine points.
The Wolves are off until returning to GNAC play Jan. 2 when they host Western Washington.
