MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon baseball team split a doubleheader against Eastern Oregon on a cold and overcast Sunday, losing 8-7 in the first game before winning 13-1 in game two at WOU Baseball Field.
In game one, a strong second inning by the Mounties (6-5) would see the Wolves down by four early. Then, in the bottom of the inning,
Owen Bischoff scored on an RBI ground out by
Zach Valdez. In the bottom of the third, the Wolves (3-5) continued to fight back with a twp-run single by
Tyler Mohler, scoring
AJ Cortese and
John Oleson.
The Mounties added three to their score in the fourth and another run in the top of the seventh to make it 8-7, all while keeping the Wolves scoreless till the bottom of the seventh when Mohler scored on a sac fly by Bischoff. In the ninth, the Wolves rallied, scoring three runs - with two coming off an
Emiliano Alarcon single to right - but it wasn't enough as WOU fell by a run.
Arturo Alvarez picked up the loss for the Wolves, going four innings while giving up seven runs on seven hits and three walks. Mohler, Bischoff and Alarcon all finished with a pair of RBI, while
Collin Irwin finished going 3-6 at the plate.
In game two, the Wolves flipped the script and was dominate early, scoring seven unanswered runs in the first three innings. After scoring a run in the first off an RBI ground out by Irwin, the Wolves would scored five in the second. After starting off getting the bases loaded after three consecutive errors by EOU, Valdez then walked, scoring the first run of the inning for the Wolves. Two pitches later, Irwin launched a ball into right-center field, scoring both
Spencer Six and Herzog. Alarcon followed with a two-run single up the middle to bring in Irwin and Valdez, quickly making the score 6-0.
In the third, the Wolves would add a seventh run after a solo shot to center field by
Justyn Herzog, his first of two home runs in the game. In the top of the fourth, the Mounties would scored one and only run off a solo home run. WOU kept the runs coming, scoring six more in the bottom of the sixth after a three-run home run by Bischoff that scored Mohler and
Curran Mitzel, followed by Herzog's second solo home run of the game, this time to right field.
Jacob Memmott tossed a strong six innings, giving up just two hits and one run with six strikeouts and a walk. At the plate, Alarcon and Bischoff had three RBI apiece, Irwin - who went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate - and Herzog both drove in two.
The Wolves are scheduled to play next at Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls with the four-game series starging with a doubleheader noon Saturday.
