Wolves take two from #10 NNU, split series with Nighthawks

NAMPA, Idaho --- It may be the first series of GNAC play, but the Western Oregon baseball team picked up a pair of key wins Sunday as the Wolves defeated 10th-ranked Northwest Nazarene 6-5 in 13 inning in game one before winning game two 4-1 to split the four-game set at Elmore Vail Field.

WOU (7-9 overall, 2-2 GNAC) and the Nighthawks (10-4-1, 2-2) found themselves tied in the sixth inning after the Wolves increased their lead in the top of the inning to 5-3 on an Emiliano Alarcon RBI groundout to only see NNU tie it with two runs in the sixth.

Behind a stellar eight-innings of shutout relief from Shane Bailey and Devin Bell, the Wolves took the lead in the top of the 13th on an AJ Cortese RBI single to left to score Collin Irwin and make it 6-5. Bell did the rest, working around a two-out error to close out the contest. He went five innings and gave up just two hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

At the plate, the Wolves pounded out 16 hits with John Oleson going 4-for-7 with a double, RBI and run. Irwin finished 3-for-7 with a run, Justyn Herzog went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run and Curran Mitzel and Alarcon each had two hits and an RBI.

In game two, WOU trailed 1-0 entering the third before a Zach Valdez RBI ground out tied the game. WOU took the lead in the fifth on an Alarcon RBI single and added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on a Tyler Mohler two-run single.

It was more than enough for WOU starter Jacob Memmott as he went the distance, giving up a run on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks as he's now 3-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.70.

WOU returns to action noon Saturday at home as it opens up a four-game series against Central Washington at WOU Baseball Field.
