Wolves, Central Washington split wild doubleheader in Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon baseball team and Central Washington split a wild doubleheader Friday with the Wolves pulling out the 7-6 win in game one in 11 innings on a Wildcat error before having the game-tying run thrown out to end game two 4-3 at WOU Baseball Field.

In game one, the Wolves (8-10, 3-3) trailed 4-1 heading into the eighth before a Justyn Herzog RBI single, a Collin Irwin sac fly and a two-out Emiliano Alarcon infield RBI single tied the game up.

The score remained that way until the 11th inning when the Wildcats (10-10, 5-1) pushed two across to take a 6-4 advantage. The Wolves were down to their final out with a runner on first when Kyle Parkman singled before Owen Bischoff hit an RBI single to make it 6-5. Herzog followed up with a single and WOU scored a run on the play on an error after the infield hit to tie the game up and runners on first and second. CWU tossed a wild pitch and the catcher picked it up and tried to get the trail runner at second - only to throw the ball away and allow Bischoff to score the winning run - CWU's sixth error of the contest.

Herzog went 3-for-5 to lead the Wolves with a double, RBI, run and stolen base. Bischoff finished 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI while Curran Mitzel also had two hits. Shane Bailey picked up the win in relief - giving up a run in an inning of work. Dylan Chalmers had a quality start for WOU, going seven innings and giving up two runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

In the second game (schedule for seven innings), WOU again took advantage of a Wildcat mishap as a throwing error allowed Bischoff to score to give WOU a 2-1 lead in the fifth.

But CWU pushed three runs across in the top of the seventh and final inning to take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the inning. WOU got within one on a Wildcat error in the outfield on a ball hit by Trey Nelson as he made his way to third base. Shane Tacla came in to run for Nelson, and after a short flyout to right couldn't score him, a ball in the dirt got away from the CWU catcher and he sprinted for home and was called out on an incredibly close play at the plate to end the game.

Owen Murdock picked up the loss, going 6.1 innings and giving up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks. The Wolves had just three hits as a team (Mitzel, AJ Cortese and Zach Valdez) while Bischoff walked twice, scored twice and had a stolen base.

The Wolves and Wildcats close out the four-game series with a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday at WOU Baseball Field.
