MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon baseball team got a pair of stellar starts Saturday against Central Washington, but could only take advantage of one of them as the Wolves won game one 6-2 before falling in game two 1-0 to split the four-game series with the Wildcats at WOU Baseball Field.
In game one, the Wolves (9-11 overall, 4-4 GNAC) were led on the mound by
Arturo Alvarez as the senior tossed a three-hitter in going all nine innings, giving up two runs while striking out five. He threw 115 pitches in his second complete game of the season.
Alvarez got all the run support he'd need in the first inning as WOU put up a three-spot in the frame on a
John Oleson sac fly and a two-run double by
Justyn Herzog. The Wildcats (11-11, 6-2) scored in the second but the Wolves answered with a RBI single by
Emiliano Alarcon in the fourth inning and an Oleson RBI single in the sixth to make it 5-1. The teams traded solo homers in the seventh - Herzog blasting his third of the season - and Alvarez did the rest.
Herzog finished 3-for-4 with three RBI, a run, a double and a homer. Alarcon also went 3-for-4 and added an RBI,
Collin Irwin went 2-for-5 with two runs and two stolen bases and Oleson went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
After 12 hits in game one, the Wolves were held to a lone Herzog single in game two as they lost 1-0.
Jacob Memmott was nearly untouchable for WOU in the second game on the mound, giving up no runs and two hits while striking out six in five innings of work. Unfortunately for WOU, CWU scored a lone run with a two-out single in the seventh inning for the lone run of the contest.
The Wolves hit the road next week as they continue GNAC play at Saint Martin's starting Saturday.Â
