NEWBERG, Ore. --- The Western Oregon baseball team got a two-run homer from
Randy Stultz and two hits apiece from
AJ Cortese,
Curran Mitzel and
Kyle Parkman as the Wolves defeated George Fox 8-5 on Wednesday at Morse Athletic Field.
WOU (12-13 overall) built a 5-0 lead on the Bruins (11-8) heading into the bottom of the seventh after Stultz's two-run homer in the fourth, two-out RBIs from
Dylan Mohler (single) and
John Oleson (bases loaded walk) in the sixth and a Cortese RBI double in the seventh.
GFU scored three in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to two before a two-run, pinch-hit single by
Trey Nelson in the eighth made it 7-3. The Bruins answered with two runs of their own in the eighth before a
Curran Mitzel RBI single in the ninth made it 8-5.
Bryce Bond pitched a perfect ninth with a strikeout to pick up his second save of the season and close out the contest.
Chris Jones was awarded the win, tossing a perfect inning of relief in the fourth as each team used nine pitchers in this mid-week contest.
Cortese went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, two runs and an RBI, Mitzel finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and Parkman finished 2-for-5.
The Wolves are now off until March 29 when they open a four-game series against Montana State Billings in Monmouth.
