ELLENSBURG, Wash. --- The Western Oregon baseball team won convincingly 11-3 in game one over Central Washington before falling in extra innings 5-4 in game two Saturday at CWU Baseball Field.
In the first game, the Wolves (19-17 overall, 13-9 GNAC) trailed the Wildcats (17-19, 12-10) 2-0 before a six-run outburst in the fifth highlighted by a
Collin Irwin two-run single and capped by an
Owen Bischoff RBI triple gave WOU a 6-2 lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Justyn Herzog paced WOU at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two walks.
AJ Cortese went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run, Irwin finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs while Bischoff was 2-for-5 with a triple, RBI, run and stolen base.
Dylan Chalmers picked up the win, going six innings and giving up two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Bryce Bond (two innings) and
Ayden Holker (one inning) combined to pitch a scoreless final three innings - retiring nine of the 10 batters they faced.
In the second game, it was the Wolves jumping out to an early lead with a two-run second inning before CWU answered with a run in the third and three more in the fourth to make it 4-2. WOU didn't go away, however, as
Emiliano Alarcon hit an RBI single in the sixth before Bischoff scored on a wild pitch in the same inning to tie it at four in the seven-inning contest.
The game went to extras, with CWU winning it in the bottom of the eighth.
Alarcon went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run - collecting two of the Wolves' five hits.
Devin Bell picked up teh loss, going two innings and giving up a run on no hits with two strikeouts, a walk and two hit batters.
These teams close out the series with a doubleheader Sunday starting at noon in Ellensburg.
